The excitement's building up for the first MCU Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Homecoming! Although we don't yet know much about the roles, a number of casting decisions are coming to light. So who'll be in the film, and what can we work out about their characters?

Marisa Tomei

Marisa Tomei will play Aunt May in 'Homecoming'

To everybody's surprise, Marisa Tomei has been cast for the part of Aunt May. At age 50, she's the youngest actress ever to take on the role, and there's been some fan backlash at such an attractive woman for this typically elderly role. To be fair to Marvel, they're no doubt planning to keep the Spider-Man franchise going for a long, long time, so were unlikely to cast the likes of Rosemary Harris (74 when she took on the role in the Sam Raimi trilogy).

Zendaya

Apparently Zendaya will be playing a mystery girl by the name of "Michelle." That's unlikely to be Peter Parker's roommate-come-girlfriend, so who knows what's planned.

Toni Revolori

According to Deadline, Tony Revolori — best known for starring in Dope — has been cast for an unknown role. The Wrap followed this up with a description that he's a character named Manuel, and he's "part of Peter Parker's high school crowd, but isn't a villain."

Laura Harrier

The Wrap also broke an exclusive that Laura Harrier — of One Life to Live — will also join the show, but we haven't got any news on the role she'll be playing.

Robert Downey Jr.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Robert Downey Jr. will return to the role of Tony Stark. We don't yet know how Iron Man's status quo will pan out in the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War, so it's too soon to know if this will be a team-up - or if Iron Man will be an antagonist.

Michael Keaton

There's been a lot of discussion around Michael Keaton's being in the film (rumours are that he'll be playing the Vulture). The talks seemed to have fallen through for a while, but the most recent news - including Jon Watts' tweet - suggests that Keaton is on board!

Just a heads-up in case you've not heard: the internet briefly blazed with excitement at the prospect of Michael Keaton joining the film, but he's a no-go I'm afraid!

Michael Barbieri

In a surprising move, Michael Barbieri - who actually auditioned for the part of Spider-Man - has been cast as Ganke, a character from Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man comics. In fact, he's the closest friend of Miles Morales, and even knows Miles's secret identity!

Unfortunately, as you can tell from the above tweet, the casting raises another question of whitewashing; Ganke is an Asian character, and Barbieri isn't an Asian actor. It's an awkward one, given Marvel Studios is still facing a backlash after the casting of Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One in Doctor Strange.
