Evil Dead Review

The fact that I am mentioning blood when talking about horror film might sound hilarious, but that's what it really is—a bloody nightmare.

Director: Fede Alvarez

Stars: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas

Genre: Fantasy, Horror

Official Synopsis: Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods.

Review Summary: This is another film about teens who are staying in the cabin in the woods and something bad happens to them. It didn't surprise me with the plot because it was more or less predictable. A bunch of teenagers finds a book of spells and, of course, read it out loud and bad things happen. It's like no-one in horror films never knows how to read quietly. Why? We will never know.

This film is full of similar silliness, that doesn't allow to take it too seriously, but maybe that's what filmmakers were thinking. It is hard to take it too seriously when the film is about trying not to die and nothing more. As a lot of other horror films, this isn't an exception.

Although the plot isn't "breaking new ground," this movie was beautifully made and it was easy to see that cinematographer knows what he is doing. They managed to make this feeling nightmarish using colors and lights, creating a picture that looks more precise and if there is blood, then it's a lot of it. Everywhere. That's what it might be special with—not the story or characters, but the way it looks. The red colour is dominating all the time through and works as a reminding symbol of this flick. The fact that I am mentioning blood when talking about horror film might sound hilarious, but that's what it really is—a bloody nightmare.

That's where it comes to the flaws of this film. There is not a big reason for most of the things that happen. I'm not talking about the story, but sequences, where it's too much of everything, for example, licking knife, nails in the head or blood rain... Where did this come from? These things are not creating a link to the main story, so they seem unnecessary and disgusting.

Of course, a horror film without horrific scenes can not be called a real horror movie, but that doesn't mean that it should be filled with jump scares that are not appropriate and mostly not in the right place. After a while, it's not even scary anymore, it gets tedious and annoying.

If you are searching for a horror movie with a fantastic story then Evil Dead will not be your "cup of tea." But if you are a horror movie lover, then you could actually enjoy it. What wasn't letting me be crazy about this film fully was the fact that I didn't really care about characters. In my opinion, they at the first minutes of this movie looked like those guys who are not going to do anything smart, they are there just to be killed.

Even the main character who is played by Jane Levy is not suggesting why we should be sorry for her or any other character, and even if you do, it takes no time for him/her to die. There are no identities, the audience is just watching a group of people who are trying to survive in the middle of something unnatural. One thing is for sure, you are not going camping as you were before.

However, a horror remake like this is something that horror lovers are craving for and it is not the worst pick, but at the same time, is very far from brilliance.

I give this film 6.5/10
