'James Bond' Producer Barbara Broccoli Says 007 Could Be A Woman In The Future

For over 50 years, Agent 007 James Bond has been lead by a strong set of male actors. Much like the Gallifreyan Doctor Who, the question of whether or not a female could take over has recently been asked of James Bond. Little has been said about the series since Daniel Craig reprised his role in Spectre in 2015. The actor could even be returning in another James Bond film sooner than we think.

It goes without saying that even Ghostbusters got the female reboot treatment. It's a movie that was met with both applause from fans and critics, but was met with mediocre reviews. However, the difference here? James Bond is known for being a male character. Even creator Ian Flemming would probably have described James Bond as a mans man.

James Bond could be a woman, or black.

In 2015 both Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson sat down with GQ for an interview to discuss the possibilities of James Bond being a woman, or black, as well as the future of the franchise. Barbara Broccoli expressed her creative ideas on whether or not James Bond could be more diverse in the future:

"It's like Hamlet, who has been played by a variety of different people, including women. So presumably Bond could be. But do I want to be making a Bond film without Daniel Craig? No, absolutely not! He's so integral to the whole process that I'm in denial about anyone else playing Bond. Genuinely."

It's clear that Broccoli is intent on keeping #DanielCraig as our current #JamesBond, but there's no doubt that the future could see something completely new. For now, it's evident that she wants to keep James the way he is. Michael G. Wilson had a bit to say on the matter as well.

"Could Bond be played by a black person or a woman? Bond is a fictitious character who has now become part of the culture. So don't ask it about Bond, ask it about Sherlock Holmes or Superman or Batman. If you weren't married to your wife, who would you like to be married to?"

Seems Michael G. Wilson isn't as open to the idea of a black person or a woman playing James. It seems he is pretty comfortable with the idea of James Bond staying the way he is.

Could Charlize Theron become the next James Bond? People hope so.

Charlize Theron has all eyes on her, especially now that her next movie just happens to be a spy film. According to Chris Hemsworth, who starred in the all-female cast reboot of Ghostbusters, he thinks the actress would be perfect as an upcoming James Bond. In addition to praising her mental and physical strengths, he even described her as an all-around strong woman.

"Well, I've made the comment that Charlize Theron should be the next Bond because she scares the hell out of me, and I think she could beat the sh** out of me and most villains out there. She embodies every ounce of strength and nobility and dignity and integrity that that character should have. She's smart as hell. She's physically able."

He even referenced her ability to fight wearing a dress as she did during the filming of Snow White and the Huntsman.

"You know, working with her on those fight scenes, [and her] doing it in high heels by the way -- and an 8-foot long gown -- was even more impressive, and I just think, why not? It's time.

While there's no doubt she has a lot of talent to show, as evident in the trailers for her spy film Atomic Blonde, Theron has some big shoes to fill if she were to join the Bond franchise as the first female James Bond.
