Mighty Morphin Mashup Trailers: The Power Rangers Get A '90s Reboot!

Ah the '90s — an era before Raven-Symoné preferred the company of women, where you could drink Sunny D without fear of losing your teeth, and Barney the Dinosaur hadn't yet been accused of sex offenses. I myself was a huge fan of the '90s, and once got a toy Power Ranger hand lodged up my nose — only my Grandma and a pair of pliers could remove it.

Talking of which, one of the many shows to come punching out of the decade was the gloriously kitsch Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, complete with pastel colors and diverse ethnic casting — thankfully there was no whitewashing here. Now you can expect your childhood to be royally dug up as Power Rangers join the reboot roster. Scream at your screen and ask if we really need another?

Back To Basics

We recently got the trailer for Dean Israelite's 2017 reboot of the franchise, which pits an edgier team of inner-city teens against Elizabeth Bank's alien overlord, Rita Repulsa. Mashup channel Darth Blender — the guys behind the Muppets and 50 Shades mix — have gifted us with a true homage to how Israelites's trailer should look. It is back to basics: including classic moments of Pink Ranger Kimberley jumping a barrel, Kimberly making a cake, and Kimberley doing her gymnastics.

There is no Elizabaeth Banks here, and Rita Repulsa is played by the one true Rita(s), Machiko Soga and Carla Perez. We return to the '90s Angel Grove and even get to see token bullies, Bulk and Skull.

The original series ran on Fox Kids from 1993 to 1995, and was a westernized version of Japanese show Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger. Filled with stock footage from the original, the trailer reminds us just how awfully brilliant Saturday mornings used to be. However, don't get too attached — the new version will only be based off our '90s favorite.

Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Ranger Rises'

Bryan Cranston, who will be playing the team's master Zordon in the new version, told The Huffington Post not to compare the two versions, because it would be like comparing Nolan's The Dark Knight to Adam West's '60s Batman:

"It's unrecognizable for the most part. There are tenets of the folklore that you hold onto for sure, but the inspiration is different, and the sensibility of it, and the approach to the filmmaking is completely different."

This comes just days after Adam West criticized the new Batman films for being too violent. Cranston aside, Darth Blender went and compared the two anyway.

The 2017 trailer certainly sets the tone for a Nolan-esque reimagining of the film, but there is sadly no sign of fan favorites Alpha the Robot or purple-headed Ivan Ooze. We can only hope that Israelite's version doesn't head down the Fant4stic route, because we all know how that ended. Seeing the '90s version back, and dubbed with the 2017 soundtrack, makes you feel all fuzzy inside with a serious case of the feels. Personally, you can keep your gritty Power Rangers, I'm going home to fantasize over Amy Jo Johnson as Kimberley.
