There is a lot of interest for the medieval and historical periods. I myself am fascinated with it and do my best to learn what I can about it. That's how I came across all the amazing series you will read about in this article. That period was filled with violence, hierarchies, and marital drama, which are portrayed in these series as mature content. If you are a history buff like me, you have to watch these series, but keep in mind that they are not 100% historically accurate, some of the ones I will mention are completely based on fiction. Let's get to it.

#5- Spartacus

This series is based on the slave Spartacus who starts a rebellion against the Roman Empire along with his gladiator friends. It has a lot to offer about Roman life and culture while also bringing a lot of action. If you don't like gruesome scenes or aren't comfortable seeing nudity, I would not recommend it, but if you are OK with it, dive in and enjoy a series with an action packed plot that teaches you a little about life in the Roman Empire.

#4- Vikings

This is a History Channel series that surprised me because of how good it was. Before Vikings, all the programs I had watched from the History Channel were documentaries, but Vikings changed that. It follows the rise of Ragnar Lothbrok and his adventures to the East, unknown territory for them which was England. This show not only is very fun to watch but also dives a little into Viking culture and beliefs. It's a great show that both entertains and teaches.

#3- The Tudors

The Tudors is one of the first historical series that I watched and was really the one that got my attention towards the time period. It follows the life of King Henry VIII through all his intrigues and abundant marriages. In my opinion, it expertly portrays his ambitions and goals during his split from the Catholic Church at the time, shifting England from Catholicism to Protestantism. This is one of the most historically accurate shows that I have watched because I always like to go online and see what is true in a historical series and what is fictional. Don't spend time reading books about Henry VIII, The Tudors will give you the information you need while keeping you entertained.

#2- Da Vinci's Demons

This one moves a little bit from the historical category to a mixture of history and fiction. As you might have guessed, it's about Italian inventor and artist Leonardo Da Vinci and his contributions to Florence and Italy. It greatly depicts his relationship with Lorenzo De Medici as they strive to improve Florence. It portrays a lot of adventures which are mostly fictional, and inventions which the real Da Vinci had thought of but didn't have the technology to create. This series, though containing a lot of fiction, will give you a good historical background into the renaissance period in Italy.

#1- Game of Thrones

Most people know and have watched this series because it has become a world phenomenon. There are people saying that it's the best series of the last 20 years and with good reason. Game of Thrones has an amazing plot that will hook and keep you hooked through all its current 7 seasons. It's set in the fictitious world of Westeros and follows the story through the eyes of many different characters. This amazing series combines medieval sword play and life along with a magical world of Dragons and zombie like frozen people called white walkers. If you like medieval themed series and haven't seen Game of Thrones yet, stop reading this and go because it will blow you away.

Those are a few of the T.V. series based on medieval life that I really like, but there are plenty more that are also highly entertaining. Series such as Borgia, The Borgias, and Medici: Masters of Florence, will all give you exciting plots with a time period set in pre-renaissance and renaissance Italy. It's a wonderful genre of T.V. series that I would recommend to anyone as it is both extremely entertaining and also informative.
