I have been a big fan on Once Upon a Time since the first episode aired. I followed religiously for years. But toward the end, I was getting bored. Then I heard about the reboot for Season 7. First I was skeptical, but the more I saw the previews, the more I wanted to see it.

So here is my take on the premiere episode.

I was pleasantly surprised. The first episode paid homage to the original show, but also had merit to stand on its own. When adult Henry is riding through an enchanted realm and crash lands into Cinderella, it was a nice fit. Even more so when Cinderella punches Henry and then takes his motorcycle. That leads us to see that this Cinderella isn't the story we grew up with, but should have. She doesn't need to be saved and she makes that very clear from the beginning.

Her evil stepmother, Victoria, is worse than the Evil Queen in my eyes. Regina/Evil Queen was moved to do evil things because of the sense of loss and betrayal. Victoria (Lady Tremaine) does things to have people fear her and to get further in life. To me, that is far worse. She doesn't see the wrong of her actions, because her emotions aren't involved at all, well, at least this early on in the season. Like Regina, I'm sure we will see her backstory and learn what caused her to be so callous.

Adult Henry and Lucy interact well together. They give you the Emma and Henry feels all over again. She is pinning so much hope that Henry will break the curse. Just like Emma with Henry, he thinks the kid has a wild imagination. I love the interaction between Henry and Jacinda, too. You can see the spark of true love between them. Along with the backstory we get from the flashbacks, you can see that maybe he's starting to find his story.

Hook, Rumple, and Regina was a highlight as well to see. We get to see Hook as Officer Rogers, who helps Henry and also seems to realize something is amiss when he looks at a picture in Lucy's book. Regina is now Roni, who runs a bar. I just feel the connection to Robin Hood and I love how different she is from the original Once Upon a Time. She may be a little more carefree, but she is still a strong woman and a strong character. Rumple, is now Detective Weaver. He seems to be up to his old tricks as a shady cop. But the one thing I do love about Rumple is there is always a reason for what he does. I don't think this is any exception.

All in all, I'm very excited for this revamp of the series. As we know, there are more than a few versions of every fairy tale, so why not explore them. I think this opens up to a lot of different versions of each character we can get. With that said, I'm looking forward to seeing how this plays out.
