Reboot or Nah?

Are some shows better off left alone?

TV shows in the 90's were amazing. Not to say the ones today aren't great, but there is something about what we call the classics, among our generation that leave no room for competition. There's no denying that. Even 20 years later, some of us can still recount episodes of Martin, The Fresh Prince of Belair, Sister Sister, Family Matters and more as if they aired for the first time yesterday. The reruns spark dialogue and the cast members are still often referred to as the characters they portrayed way back when.

I can recall in the past saying things like "Wow I wish that show would have never gotten canceled," or "I wonder what XYZ character would be doing now?" I'm sure I'm not alone in this, as many others have likely made similar statements through the years. We've said we would love to see certain shows come back, but did anyone really mean it?

I'm sure none of us really thought that a reboot would seriously happen for many of our favorite sitcoms. It's just like with movies. There are some where we really want a sequel to get closure, and then others when the sequel seems to mess up a good thing, or doesn't live up to our expectations. When you really think about it, some of the most popular shows of our childhood/teenage years did seem to end in limbo, with many questions left to ask.

I remember being intrigued by hearing about Girl Meets World, the Boy Meets World spinoff. And then there was Fuller House, which is obviously a Full House reboot. But are there any shows from the past that we really really need to come back?

I asked myself that question when I heard about the Sister Sister reboot last year. While I'd be excited to see my favorite twin actresses share the screen again, I'm not sure if the idea of the show returning to primetime really makes me feel any type of way.

Could this be true about Martin? I mean, let's look at the full picture. Martin is a classic TV show, we still laugh at the rat scene because "that wasn't no damn puppy", or reflect on our favorite lines from Martin and Gina, Cole, Pam and Tommy's no-job having arse. We just can't get enough of Jerome, Bruh-man and snotty-nosed Roscoe. However, the public scandal that occurred between the two stars way back when devastated us, and no one seems to want to forget about it, even if they do.

When news recently surfaced about a potential reboot of the show, many immediately brought up the prior issues with questions on how things could be all good now between the two main characters. While that isn't any of our business, it seems to overshadow the excitement of a reboot for some.

Let's face it, 70, 80 and 90s babies loved us some Martin. Just as we did many of the shows that came on in the 90s and early 2000s. Loving these shows in all of their glory, sometimes mean that we don't want to risk them being ruined in any way. For some, the thought of a reboot is scary for that very reason. Can you imagine Martin coming back to primetime and tanking? Like, what will that say about the legacy the original sitcom left behind?

I'm all for cast reunions, and bringing our favorite stars together again, but should some shows really be left in the past? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Are there any shows that you really want to return, or perhaps any that you'd rather not see resurface?
