Scrubs: The Next Generation? Could a Show about the Doctors' Children Be Successful?

I propose a brand new sequel series to 'Scrubs' revolving around the children of J.D., Turk, and Dr. Cox as they make their way through medical school.

If you have never taken the time to sit down and watch seasons 1-8 of Scrubs, then I strongly suggest you do. To outsiders Scrubs was nothing more than a Grey's Anatomy satire. But to true fans, it was one of the most inspirational shows known to date. It made you laugh, made your cry, and taught you a lot about life.

The show had a 9th season, but most fans choose to pretend it didn't happen due to the seasons terrible story line and almost complete re-imagining of the show.

It also ruined what might have been the best ending to a show at the conclusion of season 8.

What exactly is my idea?

My idea is to have a brand new sequel series to Scrubs revolving around the children of the original cast. The show would star the children of J.D., Turk, and Dr. Cox as they make their way through medical school which will be at Sacred Heart, the hospital, turned teaching hospital that Scrubs was set in.

A lot of this show will be based off of the future that J.D. see's at the end of Season 8:

Spoiler Warning: this video contains the last scene from season 8 of Scrubs, and is what many believe to be the "true" ending to Scrubs.

If you watched this video, you will see the future that J.D. see's for himself, and his friends. One of the most telling scenes of this video is when J.D.'s son Sam and Turk's daughter Izzy get engaged. This is an idea I would like the sequel to use.

Along with Sam and Izzy. You have Dr. Cox and Jordan's son and daughter Jack and Jennifer Dylan (J.D.). We also see that J.D. and Elliot have a daughter at this point, and Turk and Carla seem to have had a daughter.

So altogether we have six kids:

  • Sam Dorian
  • Izzy Turk
  • Jack Cox
  • J.D. Cox
  • Unnamed Daughter of J.D. and Elliot
  • Unnamed Daughter of Turk and Carla

What would the dynamic of the show be?

The show would revolve around Sam and Izzy's engagement as they and Jack attempt to make it through medical school at Sacred Heart.

Sam will be much like his father: very light-hearted and silly. While Izzy's character would be more like Carla, very strong but also have Turk's sense of humor. I believe that it would be a nice change of pace to have the best friend dynamic like with Turk and J.D. play out the same with Sam and Izzy, but with the difference being that they are also in love.

Jack will be an exact replica of his father. Arrogant, sarcastic, and a narcissist; but he will have to work his way up to being the doctor that his father was. I also would like to see John C. McGinley return to the series to present a different father son dynamic where Dr. Cox pushes Jack very hard, and could cause some father issues.

Sam and Jack are friends unlike J.D. and Dr. Cox in the original show. But Jack does make many snarky comments at Sam's expense.

As far as Jennifer Dylan, I thought that we could see her take the show outside of the hospital. Maybe she is in college, for something other than being a doctor. She hangs out with Sam, Izzy, and Jack outside the hospital, but is more of a supporting character.

As far as the two unnamed daughters, I could not think of anything to do with them, so maybe they have roles much like Dan, J.D.'s brother. Show up every once in awhile to present a new dynamic or story arc.

But essentially the show is Sam, Izzy, and Jack's. And it will tell the story of them all trying to make it through medical school and work their way to becoming doctors.

Throw in some new characters and hopefully we can have a show full of great characters like the original show.

Fan Casting:

Skylar Astin as Sam Dorian

Astin is best known for his role of Jesse in Pitch Perfect, he also recently had a starring role on the TBS show Ground Floor. Where he starred alongside John C. Mcginley.

He has an awkwardly funny style of acting that reminds me of Zach Braff.

Kat Graham as Izzy Turk

Best known for playing Bonnie on The Vampire Diaries. She plays a very strong independent woman on the show, something reminiscent of Carla. But she has taken on plenty of comedy roles as well.

Daniel Sharman as Jack Cox

Best known as Isaac from Teen Wolf. He has the curly hair, and resembles the child actor that played Jack in the original show. He is an incredibly talented British actor, who has a great American accent.

He plays a smart ass with the best, but also is amazing at pulling off sad dramatic scenes. This is honestly the only actor I could see playing the offspring of Percival Ulysses Cox.

Conclusion:

Scrubs was such a beautiful show, that I would hate to see it ruined anymore than season 9 did. But I believe if done right, a story about the children of the original cast of Scrubs could prove to be worth making.
