Superheroes

Why They Are Shaping Our World for the Better

We all know that movies about superheroes have always been around, but in recent years those movies have been more inspiring than they ever have. With amazing movies like Wonder Woman, Black Panther, and Captain America: Civil War, we have become exposed to not only just action packed movies with some of our favorite characters, we also get storylines that make us feel empowered to do whatever we set our minds on. I personally have always been a fan of superhero movies,

I’ve looked up to them since I was a little girl. And now as an adult, I feel as though I can channel my inner Wonder Woman or Flash and make what I want to happen become a reality. I have become more confident and comfortable with who I am because of these types of movies, and I have seen kids embrace themselves and feel their own strength because of these movies.

This is the time for good superhero movies. And not just the cliche, good vs evil, everything in the end is rainbows and butterflies. Now we have superheroes who know the struggles of not being entirely good and their villains not being entirely evil. We have entered a time where superheroes resemble real human beings as well as these amazing beings who save the world all the time. We get to see them mess up and redeem themselves even when we think they cannot do so.

My love for superheroes is shared with many people. And I am so glad that now there is more exposure to this world of amazing heroes. I hope that everyone can see some parts of themselves and feel more empowered than they ever have. I hope people feel like they can stand up to those who hurt them, and defend the ones they care for.

Superheroes are not just changing in movies, they are also becoming more prominent in television. With shows like The Flash, Supergirl, The Runaways, Agents of Shield, and Black Lightning, we have begun to see our favorite heroes on a weekly basis. And instead of seeing our heroes fight and win in less than two hours, we get to see them struggle with things and maybe not get back up for a while.

Our favorite superheroes have become more relatable to us and feel more like real people than some fantastical being who can do anything and everything. We get to see them fall and break, because even though everything might be okay in the end, we get to see what it’s like when they go through the worst that they can. Now more than ever we feel like we can be like them because they are like us, they are real, they don’t just get to save the day and be happy all the time. They have struggles and hardships just like us, and sometimes they don’t have all the right answers, sometimes they make things worse before they get better. And that’s all what being human and having feelings is about.

During this new age of heroes, there have been so many more people being represented than before. The LGBT+ community has people like Karolina Dean from The Runaways, Alex Danvers from Supergirl, Anissa Pierce from Black Lightning, and many others. There’s a lot of other minorities that are being represented too. African Americans and Latinos are getting the spotlight now, to kick some butt and be the hero on screen and not just in the pages of a comic book. Young children are seeing people who look like them and act like them and seeing what they can become, and who they can look up to.

Now more than ever is such an amazing time for all superheroes. I hope we continue on this path of creating the heroes that might not be your typical Captain America or Superman or whoever. We get to see the heroes that we saw in the comic books that we always wanted to see on screen. And that makes me and many others so happy, because there are finally strong, empowered people who I feel like I can relate to.
