The Best Games Of All Time

These are the five best games ever created (according to my boyfriend)

I’ve never been much of a gamer, except fighting games, which I am tremendously good at. So good, that recently, my boyfriend and I went on a double date with another couple to a gaming bar, and I beat every single person so hideously at Street Fighter, that everyone else decided they wanted to leave the bar. War tactics aside, I used to love building my dream house on The Sims and I played the first ever Tomb Raider endlessly, but that was all there was to my gaming career.

It kind of sucks because I think female gamers are cute and gaming is kind of the new ‘Rockstar’, I wish I had the time and energy to put into learning how to play and becoming a quirky online gamer girl, but a) I have a mortgage to pay and b) I think I’m a bit too much of an asshole.

My boyfriend however, is a gamer. When we first met one of the first things I asked him were his annoying habits, he told me he smoked too much and he gamed too much. The gaming didn’t bother me, I actually enjoy watching him play, which is probably a good thing. I wanted to write a piece about games in this age of gamers buying multi-million pound mansions, so I interviewed my other half about what he believes to be the best games of all time.

You may agree with him, you may not. If I have learnt anything from the internet, it’s that people love to have an opinion and that others love to disagree with it. So take this how you will: The best games of all time (according to my boyfriend)

Minecraft

Minecraft is an open world game, this essentially means the map is as big as your imagination, it is possible to continue building and playing forever. My first impressions of the game were that it looks like pieces of duplo badly imposed onto a computer screen. I couldn’t understand why so many people (children AND adults) were so drawn to this game. However, when my other half showed me his ‘world’ on Minecraft I did begin to understand, the graphics are so utterly awful but the details in the game are so intricate that your imagination begins to connect with it and you become immersed in a world that looks in no way, shape or form, realistic, but that draws you in with the games incredible fundamentals. My boyfriend confessed to me that months can go by lost in this world.

I prefer stealth games, I like the idea you have to build a house and collect certain materials to survive, you breed your own animals for food and so on and so forth. My partner prefers the combat side of things. Minecraft has both, and I must admit, I do become mesmerised watching him show me around the little house he’s built and his land full of cuboid cows and pigs.

The aim of the game, in blunt terms is to MINE for resources and CRAFT items, using said resources (Minecraft). These resources are tiered in strength and durability, you begin with wood - as it’s easy to find, you use the wood to build a pick axe, which you then use to mine cobble stone. Once you have cobble stone you can begin to mine iron, iron is used to mine gold and if you’re extremely lucky, diamond, the rarest and strongest item in the game.

Essentially Minecraft is a game that can be played forever simply for pleasure, but there is an end goal, should you wish to complete it. Once you have reached a level that you are competent in battle and have sufficient armour, potions and weaponry, you then find and kill the ender dragon (essentially the big boss at the end of the game)

Minecraft is played online and has one of the largest online gaming communities around, filled with people giving each other positive support, help and advice. When I asked my other half how he would improve the game the only criticism he had was to bring back the original way of playing. Since Minecraft has become so popular and invited a younger audience, it has become much easier to level up. Other then that, he concludes 'the game is perfect.'

Call Of Duty - World At War (Zombies)

For anyone that has never played Call Of Duty, it is an intense, first person, arcade shooter. The aim of the game is pretty simple: Kill zombies and upgrade your weapons to help you kill more zombies. Much like Minecraft you can play this forever, but unlike Minecraft there is actually no end goal. It is simply beat your best and start again. Games like Zombies are addictive in a Candy Crush type way, you just keep going and going, if you die, you start again and attempt to climb to a higher round then you were at previously.

The story behind World At War is that you are part of a team, attempting to save the world after a zombie apocalypse. The graphics and style are second to none, rivalling most high budget movies. It’s easy to see why so many people fall into this games grasp, on the complete opposite side of the spectrum to Minecraft, the realism of the game is almost terrifying. I scream and jump when I watch horror movies so I am an incredibly annoying person to have in the room when a game like this is being played.

There have been numerous Call Of Duty games, so why is this one so special? On this particular addition, the game has enabled ‘Zombie Mods’. “What the hell does that mean?” I asked my boyfriend (although I’m sure anyone from the gaming world is shaking their head at me right now) It essentially means that anyone with the technical know how can create their own zombie maps and share them with the online community, and the best part? They share these new maps for free. So the game comes with endless maps and possibilities, you can enter a brand new zombie world everyday, should you wish. All other editions of Call Of Duty don’t enable these mods (with the exception of the latest release).

FIFA

I HATE football. I was born into a house where football was the religion, a hardcore Millwall supporter, my dad quickly took my two brothers under his wing. So when I say I really, really enjoy FIFA, it makes me feel like I’m betraying myself a little. This game is for everyone, even if you can’t stand football. It has everything: the competitive element, the training element and the mathematical, brain game that comes with building a team and making sure the chemistry works between players. There is also the opportunity to buy packs that come with a mystery number of players and perks, buying these can become quite addictive, so be careful with the old credit card number in this particular element of the game.

FIFA is ridiculously realistic, especially since the players are modelled on real life. In the latest edition of FIFA there is a career mode, where you play as a new kid and follow his career from being scouted, all the way through to playing in the premier league (or whichever league you so wish to play in) my boyfriend supports Tottenham Hotspurs, so that is the career mode I have been watching for the past month.

Ins and outs of the game aside, this is the most social game out there. It is the game you can sit around with your mates and drink beer and play. In the words of my boyfriend, he loves it for ‘the banter’. I am probably the worst person to ever play FIFA, in history, I was so bad that my other half scored a goal with his own goal keeper, while I struggled to understand how to make my players do anything… that being said, this is my favourite game on the list so far, and I HATE admitting that out loud and to the entire internet.

Zelda - The Ocarina Of Time

The Ocarina of Time was something completely new and original when it first came to N64. It was created at a time when video games were there to challenge you and make you think, unlike nowadays, where everything is a DLC or a micro-transaction away. You play as a character named ‘Link’ and the aim of the game is to rescue Princess Zelda from the Evil King Ganandorf. You make your way around Hyrule, fighting enemies, solving puzzles and making friends. Music also plays a large part in the game, you have an Ocarina, which you must learn songs on. Once you have learnt the songs, they can help you progress through the game.

Another open world game with endless possibilities, The Legend of Zelda was so ahead of it’s time, and that is what makes it so special. It was the first game my partner truly fell in love with for it’s amazing story line and immersive missions and puzzles, and the best part? The Ocarina has had a revamp. Brought up to date and digitally remastered, the game has been remade for Nintendo 3DS and given a second life. So now a whole new generation can enjoy the challenge, story and open world experience.

7 Days to Die

Last but not least, stealing hours upon hours of time, 7 Days to Die is an open world PC game with the aim of simply ‘surviving’. You are dropped into a zombie apocalypse with a bandage, a can of food, a torch and some water. From there you must forage, loot and scrap as many possible materials as you can to build everything from a shelter to your own weaponry. Many games attempt the first person, open world, zombie apocalypse but none have come close to 7 Days to Die. With terrifyingly realistic graphics, the combat element of the game in unparalleled boasting some of the best weapons in any game to date.

I asked my boyfriend how he would improve the game, if given the chance. He explained that the new Alpha 15 has just been released for PC (Alpha means the game is not yet in its full and completed version) In this latest version, the creators have fixed many of the issues that have been bugging players in earlier versions. The game now has trader towns, an improved story and huge overhaul to the graphics and scenery, improving them immensely. However, to really improve the game, he tells me that he would ideally like to bring the game out of the Alpha stage and make it ready for its full release. It has been in Alpha for a few years with no future release date in sight. Players want a full and finished version of the game to continue their journey through this post apocalyptic, zombie nightmare.
