Starting this February, Marvel will unveil a new cross-over series bringing together the X-Men and the Guardians of the Galaxy together under the series - Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men: Black Vortex.

It's not the first time we get to see them crossing paths. Previously in 2014, the All-New X-Men under the brilliant Brian Bendis witnessed a grand crossover in the episode of "The Trial of Jean Grey" which establishes a romantic connection between Kitty Pryde and Star-Lord and much more. Basically, the X-Men and GOTG join hands to rescue Jean Grey/Phoenix from the clutches of the Shi'ar empire.

And for those lagging behind in their daily comic book reading ritual, All-New X-Men features the original students of Professor X - Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Iceman, Angel and Beast and the story begins with them being transported from the past to the present.

Now, they are coming back together along with other heroes Nova & Captain Marvel chasing after a powerful artifact of some kind (happens all the time!) while myriad contingencies of villains race forward to get hold of this incredible power placed somewhere across the horizon of the cosmos. Ultimately, this long lost ancient artifact turns into a nasty piece of business that can only be put to terms by the colossal combo i.e. the X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Black Vortex shown in Legendary Star-Lord Vol 1 5

Marvel held their "Next Big Thing" press conference to announce this. Among the present were writers Sam Humphries and Brian Bendis along with editors Mike Marts and Katie Kubert. BLACK VORTEX spearheaded by Sam Humphries (Writer of Legendary Star-Lord) will be running across 13 chapters in 5 different comic book pages of Guardians of the Galaxy, All-New X-Men, Nova, Cyclops, and Captain Marvel.

Sam Humphries:

The Black Vortex is an ancient artifact with the power to unlock the cosmic potential within yourself. Imagine the metamorphosis that turned Norrin Radd into the Silver Surfer, or Jean Grey into Dark Phoenix, available to anyone in the Marvel Universe.
What happens when one person submits to the Black Vortex and becomes a titan of the cosmos? What happens when a whole team does it? Or a whole planet? We open the story ten billion years ago, at the birth of the Marvel Universe, and see what a Pandora’s Box the Black Vortex can be.
Star-Lord and Kitty Pryde, they bring the two teams together, so they sit directly in the center of the event. Their blooming relationship will face serious tests in the shadow of the Black Vortex.
Mister Knife and Thane sit on different ends of the power spectrum of the Marvel Universe.

The Black Vortex Alpha issue will take over from the recent happenings in the world of Legendary Star-Lord, most importantly the growing renegade force of J-Son + Quill and Kitty stumbling upon a mirror like device. The Black Vortex, might have already fallen into the hands of Mr. Knife. The crossover follows an epic journey of 25 heroes as they endure the corruptible cosmic forces.

According to Brian Bendis (Guardians of the Galaxy, All-New X-Men, Uncanny X-Men), Black Vortex will also follow up on the events of "The Trial of Jean Grey" not as a sequel but as a character building session of Jean Grey as she learns her older self created havoc under the effect of cosmic energies.

Keeping in mind how great Black Vortex will be and the massive collaboration of several writers and creators involved in the project, both Bendis and Humphries have assured that Nova and Captain Marvel will progress as the story grows forward. The comic attraction in the series will be the moment when each character becomes 'cosmically enhanced' when exposed to Black Vortex. Particularly, Beast will be imparted cosmic knowledge while Drax gets morphed into something like a 'hulk' resembling Thanos here and there.

Take a look at the character designs of Black Vortex's Ed McGuinness right here to see how such transformations affect the characters and their effect.

Announcement was also made that the events of Black Vortex will have considerable impact on Secret Wars and also the possibility of some characters especially X-Men shifting teams under the influence of cosmic forces; some overcome while others give in and get affected psychologically. "The Black Vortex is darker than The Trail of Jean Grey."

Guardians of the Galaxy & X-Men: Black Vortex Alpha #1 will be out on February 4, 2015.

But before that, Marvel wants you to have the very first look at a selection of Cosmically Enhanced Variant Covers by artist Andrea Sorrentino.
