The Tale of 2 GH Fanbases

One story has fans divided and the soap could be looking at a ratings increase!

"You want the fans to feel something, even if it's anger, it means they are watching!" Anthony Geary, General Hospital's (arguably) most famous alum once said. It seems that those words are echoing around the writer's room these days, as the so-called "Tale of Two Jasons" gets going. The story has fans of the show divided into two camps; the "Billy Miller is Jason" camp and "Steve Burton is the only Jason" camp. By the logic of Mr. Geary, the writers have succeeded in their job, right? Maybe. But writing a soap opera is more involved than making people feel something.

If that's all it took, Donald Trump would be the best freaking writer ever. Think about it; he is always angering one segment of the population while making the other part love him even more. If GH writers did that, the ratings would fall lower than those for the Dynasty reboot. Seriously, the producers just need to give me a call, and I can save that show with two words: Heather Locklear. Sorry got off track. GH has to think about all of their fans and actors guarantees in their contracts.

The fact that this Jason story is the hottest in daytime is a credit to them, and you can ask anyone I never give GH writers credit for anything. Fans of Steve Burton are thrilled that he has returned to his former daytime home and stirring things up with his friends. It's easy to see why he's popular; he's attractive, was on the show for 20 years on and off before he left, and went over to the daytime's top-rated drama The Young and The Restless for a while. He must have gained more fans from that.

Billy Miller is a soap vet, with a varied resume that most people would envy. He began his career playing the evil Ritchie Novak on my beloved All My Children. Then he achieved his greatest fame over on The Young and The Restless as Billy Abbot, before joining GH as Jason Morgan. He is good looking, talented, and popular with his castmates. Especially his rumored girlfriend, Kelly Monaco.

Speaking of, how lucky is that girl. Even if her two male co-stars aren't secure in their jobs, she isn't going anywhere anytime soon. With 2 Jasons, this promises to be a hot love triangle that changes the show forever. As the centerpiece of the story, they need her to keep the story balanced and relatable for the audience. Maybe the fans are split between Burton and Miller, but Monaco can sell this story for everything it's worth.

Monaco's Sam might seem an odd choice to carry such an important role, given that Jason's best friend Carly is in the mix but the truth is it wouldn't make sense any other way. Yes, Carly has been on the show since the 90's, and the viewers are very invested in her, but Laura Wright (who is fabulous by the way) has only been in the role since 2005, while Monaco has been in her role since 2003. Plus with Sam being the wife of Jason, it makes sense to balance the story on her. Yes, I am arguing that this story hinges on the woman in the center and not Steve Burton. I realize that this will make some of his fans upset, but until we know who Patient 6 is, all that we know about that character is that he is played by Burton. For better or worse the Miller and Burton camps have to admit that it's Monaco who will ultimately sell this story.

It's not often that soap gets people talking outside of the daytime arena, but this story has the goods to make fans happy. Even if they are split about who the real Jason Morgan is. And that's a great feeling.
