Things Theatre Has Taught Me

How Musical Theatre Has Shaped Who I Am Today

For those that know me and for those that don't, I spend more time in my local theatre than I do in my own home. At the age of three my mum introduced me to this beautiful, singsongy, colourful world and I have not left. Being a 19-year-old actor/director/writer/all around creative soul, I'm proud to say that my world revolves around the theatre. Consequently, each show and each soundtrack I listened to is a keepsake of a point in my life, whether it be a happy or sad moment or a moment filled with passion or anger. Although theatre isn't meant to be therapy, it is very therapeutic in the sense that it teaches you a multitude of fundamental life lessons.

Therefore, here is a list of fifteen musicals and what they've taught me:

1. 'The Lion King'

That we all play a part in the circle of life and that sometimes we fall off or forget our path and that it's our job to gather the strength in us to get back up again and keep going. But most importantly, it taught me how important it is to remember who you are; to remember your past, to remember your moments of bliss as well as your moments of pain and use it as a learning experience instead of locking it away in a box and throwing away the key.

2. 'Rent'

There are 525,600 minutes in a year so cherish them all; live in moment and like Lion King, don't get stuck in your past, surround yourself with the people who that love you for you and remember that there is always someone who has it worse off than you.. As the show says, there is "no day but today."

3. 'Les Miserables'

Even though life might be horrible, there will always be a brighter tomorrow and that that brighter tomorrow is worth fighting for. It additionally taught me how much one simple act of kindness can mean to someone and how one kind act can literally, in Valjean's case, can change someone's life.

4. 'Spring Awakening'

This musical taught me that sex is not something to be ashamed or afraid of and that love can leave you with deep wounds that will take time to heal.

5. 'Phantom of the Opera'

Other than to always leave box five open, it taught me an individual that to you might perceive as a monster, may in fact be yearning to be loved and for your compassion. Sometimes you need to take the time to remove someone's mask to see who they really are inside.

6. 'Jesus Christ Superstar'

To think about your actions (whether they be good or bad) before you put them into play and that if you happen to make a mistake, it is your responsibility to own up for it.

7. 'Kinky Boots'

Teaches you to accept people for who they are and that no matter what our gender or sexual orientation, we are all human beings that deserve to be loved in the same fashion.

8. 'Dear Evan Hansen'

That you are not alone and that there's always someone that you can talk to, whether it be a support system, a friend or a parent, about what you're going through. Moreover, it teaches you that each individual has a voice and each individual deserves to be heard and to start each day with a positive outlook.

9. 'Wicked'

Teaches you the significant effect a great friendship can have on your life, as well as strengthening the message that it's okay to be different and then even if you are different; you still carry that same chance to fly, to achieve your dreams and to be who you want to be.

10. 'Wizard of Oz'

That somewhere over the rainbow all of your dreams came true and that it's your responsibility to keep looking and fighting for that rainbow.

11. 'Mamma Mia'

That sometimes live gives you a second chance and it's up to you whether you want to take it or not. But whatever you do, it's all going to be okay.

12. 'Seussical the Musical'

To quote the musical per se "A persons a person no matter how small," and that "anything's possible," if you put your mind to it.

13. 'The Last Five Years'

That love is fragile and sometimes it leaves a lot of pain and destruction in its path. However, although it can take days, weeks or months, you have the power in you to heal and to move forward.

14. 'Hamilton'

That to achieve something, you need to work hard for it, to always take a shot and that you have no control on life or death but you do have control on how you write your story.

15. 'Matilda'

That just because you're small or young, doesn't mean that you can't be at the top of your class and achieve the miracles you want to achieve.
