'Whatever Happened to Monday' Review

One of the film's main problems, though, was how disposable the sisters felt. As a viewer I had trouble telling them apart from each other; besides wigs and clothing, there was nothing that made them different from one another.

Title: What Happened to Monday

MPAA Rating: UnratedDirector: Tommy WirkolaStarring: Noomi Rapace, Glenn Close, Willem DafoeRuntime: 2 hr 3 mins

What Happened to Monday is a Netflix original film. Set in 2073, families can only have one child due to overpopulation. Seven sisters live in hiding, each of them named after a day of the week. Each of them can only go outside on the day that corresponds to their name. When in public, they take on the identity of Karen Settman. When one of the sisters disappears one day, the others resolve to find out what happened to her, all the while having to avoid the government finding out about them.

What We Think

It surprised me that one of the best parts of What Happened to Monday was a brutal, bloody, and impressive action sequence. The first half of this film was good; the scenes with Willem Dafoe and the sisters were great. Watching the sisters interact with each other was enjoyable due to great chemistry, and Noomi Rapace was awesome like always.

One of the film's main problems, though, was how disposable the sisters felt. As a viewer I had trouble telling them apart from each other; besides wigs and clothing, there was nothing that made them different from one another. That and the unique mystery of the film was traded in for a generic action plot, causing me to lose interest halfway through. It would have really benefited the film if its world, and the lives of these sisters, were explored more in-depth, but that didn't happen.

Our Grade: C+

It's pretty bad writing when there isn't enough to the main characters of a film you're watching that you can't even tell the main characters apart, but it's even worse than the sci-fi mystery you were promised (and very excited about) turns out to be sidelined for the plot of a predictable action movie that you'll probably forget about by tomorrow.
