As a teenager, most of my spare time is spent watching my favourite TV shows, and as a college student I don't get a lot of spare time, so I want it to be spent right. With the thousands of TV shows available on Netflix, it can be daunting deciding what the best shows are to binge on. Nobody has time to get through half a season of a show that looks interesting just to find yourself falling asleep through each episode. I'm here to save you of that terrible waste of time with seven of the best TV shows streaming on Netflix that definitely need to be added to your list, to ensure you're not watching Netflix wrong.

1. 'Jane The Virgin'

With an incredibly diverse cast, including Gina Rodriguez and Andrea Navedo, it's already hard to see what can go wrong. Well, in fact, lots can in this tremendous telenovela. The show begins with the main character, Jane Villanueva, a young Latina virgin becoming pregnant after being accidentally artificially inseminated with Rafael Solano's sperm. (I was confused too) This show is definitely one like no other, with many twists and turns to keep your interest along the way. The addition of a narrator keeps the show lighthearted and comedic and the perfect show for you.

2. 'One Day at a Time'

Where do I begin? There is absolutely nothing like this TV show. It handles hard-to-talk-about subjects with ease, and I promise you will never have seen so many important issues discussed so incredibly well in any other show. With an almost all Latinx cast, including Justina Machado and Isabella Gomez, just a few topics dealt with include:

  • Racism and racial prejudice when Alex gets bullied for being Cuban, and racism between Latinx ethnicities
  • The harmful and hypocritical culture of gun violence
  • LGBTQ+ in the form of Elena being lesbian, difficulties of coming out and homophobia, plus preferred pronouns being used
  • Depression and anxiety, the detrimental effects of post traumatic stress and the stigma around mental health

All of this and so much more discussed in the most respecful, hilarous way possible. I could not reccommend this show enough.

3. 'Grey's Anatomy'

I'm one hundred percent certain you've heard of this incredibly popular TV show before, and there's no mystery as to why it's so popular. If you haven't already binge watched all fourteen seasons, including its spinoff show Private Practice, what are you doing? Although this show is about surgeons and all things medical, it definitely doesn't end there. This show is no stranger to thrill and excitement, heartache, happiness, sadness, shock, and literally every other emotion you can possibly think of. If you love TV shows with lots of seasons to keep you busy binging, you really cannot go wrong with this one.

4. 'The Good Place'

I'll be honest, when my friend told me about this show, I was a little pessimistic. 'A show about death' didn't initially grab my attention, but let me tell you how wrong I was. If you're expecting darkness, horror, and possibly gruesomeness, you're wrong too. Waaaayy off, in fact. It is the complete opposite of that. With great comedy and fantasy, the main characters of the show, including the incredible Kristen Bell and Ted Danson, learn important life lessons that even I as a young adult have learned from. Not only that, there are crazy twists to keep you on your toes that nobody could ever have expected. This is the perfect addition to your expanding list of shows.

5. 'Suits'

Never have I ever been more starstruck by a television show about law, and never will I ever be again. It doesn't matter if you care about law or lawyers or anything of the sort, with an amazingly talented cast including Patrick J. Adams and the newly-royal Meghan Markle, you'll never want to stop watching. Former student Mike Ross finds himself illegally working for a law firm, by impressing Harvey Specter with his profound knowledge of all things law. Knowing he had found someone special, Mike is hired without having been to law school. But who will keep his secret? With vast amounts drama, comedy, relationships and more, this will make your Netflix list go from 1 to 10.

6. 'Stranger Things'

I gave this show a go when it first came out, and, to be honest, I was not really a fan. I usually do not particularly enjoy sci-fi or supernatural shows (which is why The Vampire Diaries or Teen Wolf isn't on this list) but with the hype building up amid the release of season two, I gave it another go. I was totally shocked to find myself mouth wide open, staring at my TV screen in awe at the unbelievable actors including Millie Bobby Brown and Winona Ryder, the stunning cinematography and outstanding storyline. There is no wonder this show is so popular. With special powers, alternate dimensions and all that is crazy, this show will surely spark your interest, and will be the perfect addition for your list.

7. 'Brooklyn Nine Nine'

A police sitcom like you've never seen before. With a fantastic cast including Terry Crews, Andy Samberg, and Melissa Fumero, this show is more than just your average show about police. There's diversity, with two Latinas, one being bisexual, and two Black men in authority, with the police captain being openly gay. Not only that, there's amazing comedy, and thrilling drama. If you're looking for a fast-paced TV show with lots to offer, add Brooklyn Nine Nine to your list.

And there we are, seven of the best TV shows currently on Netflix. Each one offers something different to the other in terms of content, genre, cast and more, so boredom is never an option. Your list will surely be sparkling with any one of these additions, and I assure you that you will enjoy at least one, if not all of them. Never waste time searching for something new to watch on television again, as every one of these delights will ensure that you are not watching Netflix wrong.
