10 Biggest Questions Raised by Trailer for Transformers: The Last Knight

the fifth installment in the franchise sets up another trilogy, the new plot raises the opportunity to answer many longstanding questions left since Transformers: Age Of Extinction. But does the new trailer raise more questions than it answers?

Here are questions we have after watching the Transformers: The Last Knight trailer, which the movie itself will surely answer.

1. What Part Does Lt. Colin Lennox Play In The Story?

The new Transformers film is bringing back several fan-favorite cast members from the original trilogy, including Josh Duhamel, John Tuturro and Tyrese Gibson. Duhamel and Gibson both played two of the soldiers who originally came into contact with the robots in the first film. So why are they returning to action? It seems like the two would want a break from all the techno-warfare.

Last time Lennox (Duhamel) and Epps (Gibson) were seen, they were both heading home as the Decepticon threat was neutralized once again. Now they're back in the middle of another Transformer war.

The trailer for Transformers: The Last Knight does feature a few shots of what appears to be Duhamel's character, Lt. Colin Lennox, fighting alongside a more robust Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg), but not much has been said towards why Lennox or Yeager are involved. Gibson and Tuturro weren't seen in the first trailer, so they'll probably play minimal roles in the film, perhaps as background characters to assist in operations of ongoing missions.

In regards to more human characters, Mark Wahlberg is returning for Transformers: The Last Knight as well. Apparently Wahlberg's character of Cade Yeager has transformed quite a bit, since his original plan was to junk Optimus Prime in Transformers: Age Of Extinction. Each scene with Yeager in Transformers: The Last Knight looks integral to the plot, so he probably has something very important to do.

We should also note that several set photo descriptions seem to indicate Wahlberg's Yeager holds the Excalibur sword at one point in the film; tying in where the Arthurian artifacts come into play.

2. What Has Happened To Optimus Prime?

Along with the return of numerous human cast members, several well-known Transformers will be returning for the new film as well — and they're not limited to Bumblebee and Megatron.

Optimus Prime, the most famous autobot, made a rather shocking return after supposedly leaving for good in Transformers: Age Of Extinction. But he's back now and he's fighting Bumblebee for an undisclosed reason. The real interest here is which autobot is fighting for the just cause and why are they fighting in the first place?

With so many potentialities on the table, it will be really interesting to see how this scene plays out. However, it's possible some split-second screenshots in the trailer might have given us a few subtle clues to explain why Optimus Prime is fighting Bumblebee.

In the trailer, the first images of Optimus Prime are of his lifeless body floating in space. At this point, it appears as if something or someone ended his life after he jetted off into space in Transformers: Age Of Extinction.

Floating around lifelessly in space, the next few shots depict a similar area of space — but in this space, a planet-eating machine consumes the moon...and that machine can only be one thing: Unicron.

3. Is Unicron Controlling Optimus Prime?

Unicron is a planet-devouring machine and one of the most highly associated villains of the Transformers franchise. Beyond what Unicron is, knowing that he's in the same space as Optimus Prime, after Optimus has been left for dead, sets Optimus up to become a herald for Unicron.

Unicron has the ability to revive a Transformer, but when he performs this process, Unicron gains complete control over those he revives. Keeping that in mind, it makes sense for the Unicron of Transformers: The Last Knight to possess similar abilities since the scenes of Optimus rising from the ashes are likely Unicron's doing. It's not like any other Transformer is going to come across Optimus floating in space, so the only logical explanation is for Unicron to find Optimus and turn him into his slave.

4. Why Are Optimus Prime's Eyes Purple?

Within the last few shots of the trailer, Optimus extracts a blade from his wrist to attack Yeager and Bumblebee. We already know that Optimus and Bumblebee will fight at some point, but what's of interest here are the color of Optimus's eyes.

Optimus and all the Autobots normally have glowing blue eyes, and the Decepticons have red eyes, but Optimus's eyes have a purple tint, so that probably means someone or something is controlling Optimus Prime. The change in eye color may explain why Optimus is fighting his former comrade, Bumblebee.

5. Is There Time Travel?

Some new, quite menacing Transformers are making their debut in Transformers: The Last Knight. A Transformer seen in the Arthurian period looks to be a Decepticon. No present-day characters are with him. So is this just a flashback, or a sign of time travel?

When word of multiple time periods leaked, fans immediately assumed there would be time travel in the film despite there being no official word as to whether or not time travel will be involved. Some of the Arthurian artifacts featured in the film appear to be highly sought after so the focal point of the film could be based on a sword, namely the Excalibur, since it appears to have some special attributes and is highly sought-after in Transformers: The Last Knight.

Within the first few shots of the trailer, we can see Anthony Hopkins's character looking over some artifacts from the Arthurian period — artifacts that we can assume have something to do with Excalibur. There are quite a few swords in the room, so King Arthur's sword is likely to be sought out by both humans and Transformers. For now, it appears that time travel isn't involved.

6. Who Is Hopkins's Character?

Hopkins sounds like a historian in the trailer, quite informed of the past. He is surrounded by Arthurian memorabilia, which means that Hopkins has an important role to play in connecting the past to the present. Some bits in the trailer depict scenes from the past, so those images paired with Anthony Hopkins narrating likely means he'll be the one to explain what happened to King Arthur's armies in what looks to be an attack by a renegade Transformer.

The trailer then switches over to more explosive action in what we assume is a Nazi-occupied villa during WWII. More speculation than fact here, but assuming that Excalibur is at the center of the film and is the object desired by several parties, the Nazis would probably find benefit in obtaining the sword for themselves as well. That explanation would add some context to why a Nazi-occupied villa would be attacked by a Transformer that may be seeking it.

Regardless of those split-second images depicting different eras in history, there is a slight possibility that time travel will be utilized at some point in the film, but it's highly unlikely at this point.

7. Who Is The New Transformer Guarding a Girl?

Apart from Transformers of the past entering the fold, there appear to be new Transformers joining the fight in the current day as well. One of them can be seen accompanying a young girl, so they're likely portraying roles similar to Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) and Bumblebee in the original Transformers film.

Sam and Bumblebee were inseparable, as they found each other under strange circumstances, and it looks like this new human-Transformer duo will fill a similar dynamic in Transformers: The Last Knight.

Isabela Moner is playing the new human character, Izabella. The Transformer accompanying Izabella has yet to be identified. Considering that the mysterious Transformer is bonding with a human, he's probably an Autobot trying to save the world — although he appears to be damaged, so this Autobot might not make it through the film.

Nothing else appeared to stand out, despite the trailer being so jam-packed with footage that we already know of three major conflicts in the film, as well as a good idea of who the villain is, and it's not Megatron this time around.

8. What Is Megatron Up To?

He's still a villain in Transformers: The Last Knight, despite not being heavily featured in the trailer. If you're thinking Megatron wasn't seen in the trailer, you may have blinked and missed the brief shot:

While there wasn't a clear image of Megatron in the trailer, some concept art released early on gives us a better look at his new body in Transformers: The Last Knight.

Aside from Megatron's transformed mode, it appears as if he's getting an update to his disguised form as well, but it's not much of a disguise.

9. What Will Megatron's Transformed Mode Look Like?

According to recent reports (potential spoiler follows), Megatron's disguised form would not be a vehicle like his previous iterations. This time around, Megatron's alternate form will be a three-headed dragon. Some brief screenshots from the trailer also provide us with our first glimpse at Megatron's dragon transformation.

To back up the claim of Megatron being the dragon-Transformer in the trailer, we just need to look at a few past iterations of Megatron that have depicted him transforming into variations of a dragon:

Along with several Transformers animated series depicting Megatron's transformed mode as a dragon, other mediums such as the comics show Megatron with influences of his dragon mode integrated into his body when he transforms:

Regardless of Megatron receiving a new appearance, his role in the film is still to be determined. Hopefully Megatron returns at the right time, because I really don't want to see Optimus kill Bumblebee. That retracted blade in the last few screenshots of the trailer looked like it went through Bumblebee's head.

10. Will Megatron Be the Unlikely Hero to Save Bumblebee from Optimus?

Megatron could potentially step between Optimus and Bumblebee before Bumblebee and Optimus kill each other. We've already seen how Megatron will turn on his own comrades just for the satisfaction of killing Optimus himself, so Megatron would likely stop the fight between Bumblebee and Optimus for the right to kill Optimus when he sees fit.

Although it's quite possible Megatron might just come up behind both Optimus and Bumblebee, rip their heads off at the same time, and move on.

For now, we can only speculate on how Optimus, Bumblebee and Megatron will play into Transformers: The Last Knight since their roles appear to have changed substantially from the first time they were introduced in Transformers (2007). The trailer gave us some answers to the questions on all our minds, but it also raised more questions in regards to what Michael Bay has planned for the next two Transformers films.
