10 Movie Sequels That Surpassed the Original
Although some folks won't agree with these choices, even in their own right, these movies are winners.
Aliens
Aliens was the sequel to the 1979 hit movie Alien. Sigourney Weaver reprised her role as Ellen Ripley. This time, a crew will help her seek out and destroy the aliens that wreaked so much havoc in the previous film. Aliens was more of an action film and is a stark contrast to the horror-type feel of the first movie.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Released in the wake of the successful The Terminator film, Terminator 2: Judgment Day revisits Sarah Connor and her son John. John is destined to one day save the world, and an evil Terminator is sent back in time to kill him before that has a chance to happen. Everything is taken up a notch in this sequel and having Arnold be the good guy was an interesting twist.
Evil Dead II
Evil Dead II is basically just a remake of the first movie. It had a higher budget, which meant it had more special effects than the first film. The highlight of the film was the chainsaw arm and the sequel was overall more hilarious and ridiculous than the first.
The Dark Knight
The Dark Knight is better than Batman Begins for one simple reason: The Joker. Heath Ledger played the villain perfectly and added a maniacal darkness to the film. Ask any fan of the Batman franchise which film was better, and you'll likely get overwhelming responses for The Dark Knight.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
The crew of the USS Enterprise is back, battling a genetically engineered bad guy by the name of Khan. While the first movie was rather slow, the sequel was thrilling and brought back the kind of atmosphere that Trek fans had come to know.
The Empire Strikes Back
The Empire Strikes Back was the sequel to the original Star Wars film. Released in 1980, it revealed to audiences that Darth Vader was Luke's father, and Obi-Wan, who became one with the Force during the first film, shares his wisdom with Luke. It is a favorite among Star Wars fans worldwide.
Toy Story 2
There's no denying the original Toy Story was a unique and fun kids movie. However, Toy Story 2 was even better. The story was completely original, there were no unnecessary product placements seen in many sequels today, and it told an exciting story that didn't make it seem like the filmmakers were trying too hard. Add those things to the fact that it made grown men tear up and you've got a sequel better than the original.
X2: X-Men United
X2 was a much darker film than its predecessor was. It delved into the emotions of the characters that audiences wanted to know more about. The film starts off in an exciting way, with an assassination attempt, and keeps the action coming until the very end.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
The Lord of the Rings is one of the most celebrated trilogies of all time and part of that is due to the second film. It is a brilliant movie, in that it can stand alone quite well and really shines when put together with the other two films. The second installment of this trilogy takes a deep look into the troubled life of Gollum.
Spider-Man 2
Doc Ock makes this movie greater than the first. He is a villain with style, yet with just enough cunning to make him a little creepy. The battle sequence alone between Spider-Man and Doc Ock makes this film worth watching. Spider-Man 2 had the right amount of character-driven story lines and action to make it the best of the three.
All of these movies are better than their predecessors for one reason or another. Although some folks who buy ios app reviews won't agree with these choices, even in their own right, these movies are winners.
