'13 Reasons Why' Thoughts/Controversy

Other Stuff Too

So now that I finished the series, let's get into the predictions and thoughts. There are controversies as well. The main controversy stems from the show as a whole. People are still worried that the people who watch it may get triggered. The thing about triggers is that you have to trust people not to watch what may trigger them and to be responsible if they start to get triggered. You also can't take a show off the air cause it may trigger some but not everyone.

Another thing that people are afraid of in this season is that the teens may not realize that suicide is final. In this season we keep seeing Hannah's ghost. She was asking Clay for forgiveness and trying to help him through her death. When you die you can't help people through your death like she did and you can't ask for forgiveness. I know that teens aren't stupid, but I feel like they may not understand that suicide is very serious and very final. I sometimes think that teens or young adults blow some stuff out of proportion. I know some adults do that too but teens and those suffering from depression are more likely to end their life because they feel like life may never get better. Life does get better and once you commit suicide you can't make it better. You also can't have a hand in how people feel and cope with your death. If you want attention or to make people feel bad, suicide is not the way to do so.

One thing I think they did right was showing a few forms of dealing with rape or sexual assault. You have Nina who ended up cheating on her boyfriend and blamed part of it on not being ok with what happened to her and not processing it. I understand not wanting what happened to you to define you but talking about it doesn't mean it will define you. Sometimes you have to talk about stuff to get better. Another girl who was raped and assaulted was Hannah. She obviously had other things going on but her assault/rape had a hand in her suicide. Jessica was the main one we see and she was the one who was just riding out her emotions. Also, we have Chloe who I think has Stockholm syndrome and wanted to protect Bryce who is now leaving. Chloe sadly now has a baby she doesn't want because of the assault. The last one is Tyler who Monty (who I thought was Scott) sexually assaulted with a mop. Tyler wanted to shoot the dance. I feel like Tyler was very similar to Hannah, except for an attack on the dance instead of suicide.

Tyler had caused some controversy with his scene in the bathroom with Monty. People said it was uncalled for to show a scene like that with that kind of brutality and detail. The only reason to show something like that in the way they did is to show the brutality and grossness of sexual assault. This scene in any detail is so important because it shows that sexual assault or rape is not a girl problem. Guys and girls can be raped or sexually assaulted by guys or girls. It's not just a guy on girl crime.

Now to the unanswered questions. What is going to happen when the cops show up to the school? Will Clay get rid of the gun? Will anyone besides the students know that the Polariods exist? Why did Nina steal and burn the Polaroids? Will Hannah's ghost be back? What hard topic will they cover next? What will happen to Tyler? What happened to Marcus and Sheri towards the end of the season? Will we see more of them in season 3? What will happen with Bryce and Chloe now that she's pregnant? Will Chloe keep the baby? Will Jessica stay with Alex or go with Justin? Will Clay find out that Justin is using again? What will happen with Monty?

I think Clay will at least put down the gun before the cops get there. The pictures may never be a problem again now that Nina destroyed them. I think she did so to protect the girls Bryce raped but in a way didn't she protect him? I don't think Hannah's ghost will be back. I don't know what topic they will cover next besides teen pregnancy. Tyler will possibly go down a bad path, maybe even suicide? I think Marcus will be back but Sheri may not. I think Bryce will be a jerk and try to get Chloe to get an abortion. I think Jessica will be confused for a while about who to be with. There is no way Clay will not find out about Justin using. Monty and the whole team including the coach should get in trouble.

I want to address some of the theories from season one that was debunked this season. Alex was in the ambulance and Tyler had nothing to do with it. Tony is not a ghost and hadn't been.

I also want to say that I know this show is good but there are serious topics that were talked about in the show. I want to address them one by one.

Bullying is never a good thing. Spreading rumors and being mean can ruin someone's life. As much as you think you want to ruin a life, you don't. You also don't want them to end their life. I don't care how fat, ugly or worthless you think they are they don't deserve to die.

Suicide is never the answer. The decision to die is a very final and very adult decision. There are adults who have cancer who are making end of life decisions. In most cases, as tired and sick as they are, they don't want to die. So just give life more of a chance.

Sexual assault and rape are things you need to tell an adult about if they happen to you. You need to process what you are feeling. It is ok not to be ok. It happens more than you think and you can find peers and people to talk to.

If you are having sex with someone use protection! You don't want an unplanned pregnancy to happen and you don't want to catch a disease. If you think you can't catch anything you are wrong. Just assume everyone can catch something or get pregnant. Look into oral damns for oral.

Guns should only be used for hunting and defending yourself. Guns should never be used on bullies or fellow students at school.
