3 Advantages of Being a Nerd

Because Nerds Rule the World

I'm nerdy and I know it.

At the age of two, I discovered my father's NES and played my first game, Super Mario Bros. When I was five-years-old, I became more interested in nerdy things, for example, watching tv shows like Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and also having plenty of toys and trading cards. So basically, I was the nerdy one in my family. I had that personality as a kid and now as an adult. I'm going to share with you three advantages of being a nerd and show everyone that there's nothing wrong with liking certain things.

Owning Lots of Nerdy Shirts

Since 2010, I have worn and owned over two dozen shirts. From Popeye to Power Rangers, I love to don a shirt that I love, depending on my mood. Some people think I have too many of them. Why do I wear nerdy shirts? For two reasons: they fit and they're comfortable. I worked at a non-profit, doing office work, for almost five-years. It's all I wear every day at the office and outside of work. My co-workers and everyone else loved them. If you were to ask me which shirt is my favorite. It's hard to decide, but I'll say that the Power Rangers and Nintendo shirts are my favorites. I've worn a different Power Rangers shirt every Monday, in honor of Morphin Monday when I was working at my office job and at my last place of employment at a call center. Then every Friday, (Geeky Shirt Friday, to be exact), I wear a random shirt and post pics of me wearing them on social media, receiving positive feedback. Long story short: wear what's satisfying to you.

Being Surrounded by Other Nerds

A super, nerdy selfie. Nerds just want to have fun.

As a kid, I was shy and felt left out at times. Also, I was severely bullied because I wore glasses. When I started doing cosplay almost four-years ago, that all changed. Surround yourself by other nerds who share your interests. Doing that builds positive friendships and a healthy bond that's unbreakable. It's great to share your passions with other people and they will love you for that. It doesn't mean that you're weird or strange. We all have different things that interests us. Going to conventions are a great way to meet people. After I moved to a new area years ago, I didn't have one single friend. After I attended my first convention, I had made so many friends and since then, made even more friends at different conventions. Having nerdy friends who get you and be by your side are key. It's a way for you to open up to people more and getting you out of your shell.

Having the Freedom of Being Yourself

Blue Ranger Power!

It's okay to be yourself, regardless of what people tell you. Most people see things wrong with that, because they envy you and you're enjoying the things that you love. Most people didn't like me because of the way that I looked, talked, or my interests. So any time when someone says that I'm weird, I would take it as a compliment. I don't take offense to it at all, because it's true. I rather be weird than be someone who's serious all the time. We are all strange in our own way and it's a good thing. I was tired of being told that I was too old to like or have certain things. Over two weeks ago, I had written an article about the five things adults will never grow out of and one of them was video games. I mentioned in that article, talking about Gavin McInnes, who said on YouTube that adults shouldn't play video games and they are only for children who were "special". I went in on him on Facebook, as did a majority of people in the gaming community. In closing, I want to say something to all nerds: like whatever you want. You don't need anyone's approval of what you can and can't like. Screw what other people think about you. The most important thing to remember is that just because you're an adult, it doesn't mean we can't feel like kids. Read all the comic books, collect all the action figures, and play all video games you want. I feel like a kid every day and could care less about what people say about me. Everyone should have that same mentality. After all, nerds rule the world and will continue to do so.
