3 Reasons To Be Excited For 'Iron Fist'

Iron Fist has had his ups and downs over the years, but he has made a lasting impact.

Iron Fist, is and has always been my favorite male superhero without question (Captain Marvel being my favorite female hero, if you were curious). I'm not really sure what first drew me to the character, but I do know why I love the character so much: he's bloody awesome!

Iron Fist was created by two pillars of the comic book world, Gil Kane (Green Lantern & Atom) and Roy Thomas (Justice Society of America, Ghost Rider, X-Men & Avengers). Iron Fist's first appearance was in 1974's Marvel Premiere #15 and that was followed up with several titles after his team-up series with Luke Cage entitled Power Man and Iron Fist. He has had several solo series over the years, most notably the series The Immortal Iron Fist, which expanded on his origin story and the history of the Iron Fist power itself. Iron Fist has had his ups and downs over the years that followed the rise and fall of kung-fu films in popularity, but he has had a lasting impact on the stories in comics and animation.

After Iron Fist established himself through several crossover stories, he has since become a staple to the Marvel Universe. He was a regular character through the New Avengers series (2010-2013) and he has incredibly close ties to Luke Cage and Daredevil. He also is well established in Marvel animation, as he has appeared in The Super Hero Squad, The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes & Ultimate Spider-Man. These ties are part of the reason that he's getting his own Netflix show. Now, I don't know about you but I am ridiculously excited for Netflix to bring Iron Fist to life and here are a few reasons why.

Showrunner: Scott Buck

Scott Buck has been a staple for several incredible series' including the final four years of Dexter. As well as writing for Six Feet Under and Rome. If that doesn't sell you, then how about what Jeph Loeb (Executive Producer/Head of Marvel Television) had to say:

Scott came in with a take on Iron Fist that quite simply knocked us off our feet. We always look for the most creative minds in the field to help us bring our heroes to life, and with Scott we've found someone that can deliver yet another great series in the ongoing story of The Defenders.

Those sound like pretty convincing words to me, and considering his collection of solid productions up to this point, I'm convinced of his ability to create something worthy of the Iron Fist name.

Starring: Finn Jones

This news broke a couple days ago, and I think it's a superb casting choice. Finn Jones (Ser Loras Tyrell from Game of Thrones) has been announced as landing the coveted lead in Iron Fist. Now, it seems that this casting has caused an uproar because, well, Finn Jones isn't Asian.

Wait...What?! Why does that matter?

Iron Fist is established as a Caucasian young man who loses his parents and is left in K'un Lun where the native culture doesn't want to accept him. Then when he returns to his home, he isn't accepted there either because of what he has learned in K'un Lun. The argument is that because of the Asian culture that is present in the story, Iron Fist should be re-imagined as Asian and forgo the entire character as he is written. Seriously?!? ... ... ... Ahem, where was I?

Sorry, off the soapbox. Whether you like the casting or not, probably won't deter you from watching Finn Jones portray the character. And I believe that Finn will bring a stellar portrayal of Iron Fist, just look at what Charlie Cox (an unknown) did for Daredevil. I can see the same thing happening for Iron Fist.

Story: Established

This is where so many fans are worried about how to adequately bring his story to life, considering how much mysticism is involved. Yet it seems as though they will be introducing Iron Fist as he returns to his home after being in K'un Lun. Take a look at the official synopsis below:

Returning to New York City after being missing for years, Daniel Rand fights against the criminal element corrupting New York City with his incredible kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist.

So it seems that Danny Rand will start off with established powers, much like we saw with Jessica Jones. Most likely we will be given several flashbacks throughout the series, as Iron Fist's story will play into the future of The Defenders.
