Recently, the pilot episode of the all-new Charmed, a reboot of the classic 90s series starring three sister witches, aired on The CW.

While the new series is certainly striking out its own way, the first episode contains just enough links to the original to keep older fans happy.

1. Melinda Warren

Soon after the new Charmed ones—Macy, Melanie, and Maggie—learn of their powers, Mel is seen flipping through the new Book of Shadows, briefly pausing on a page about Melinda Warren.

Melinda Warren was an important part of the lore in the original show. As she was burned at the stake, Melinda prophesied the birth of the Charmed Ones, three powerful sisters that would one day be born from her line. These sisters were Prue, Piper, Phoebe, and later Paige—the Charmed ones of the original series.

Melinda is seen in the series twice, once in the season one episode The Witch is Back," where the sisters summon her to help defeat a powerful Warlock, and again as a baby in "All Halliwell's Eve," after Piper Halliwell aids in her birth.

Whether or not Melinda features further in the new Charmed is unknown, but it is a fun nod to the original.

2. The eldest Sister is the most powerful.

While Macy, the eldest sister, joins youngest Maggie in struggling to accept her powers, she is the first of the three to master her ability of Telekinesis. Many of the new Charmed Ones victories in the first episode are due to Macy's adept use of her powers.

This can be seen as a reference to the original, where the eldest sister was the most powerful. At first this was Prue, but Piper soon shifted into the role following Prue's death at the beginning of Season 3.

3. The time freezing ability works best when calm.

Middle sister Mel initially struggles to control her new power of freezing time. Eventually, she realises that the power works best when she isn't angry.

This is both somewhat similar, and slightly different from the original Charmed. Rather than Mel's anger issues, Piper could be slightly neurotic, with her time freezing power initially triggered by moments of panic.

Like Mel, however, Piper gains true control when she is calm. This becomes especially important later, when Piper's powers expanded to include molecular combustion, ie, blowing things up.

4. Empathy

One of the biggest differences between the original Charmed and the reboot is the power of the youngest sister. While Phoebe had the power of premonition, Maggie instead has the power of telepathy—reading minds.

Despite this change, there are still links to the original. New Whitelighter Harry informs Maggie that her power is linked to her sensitivity and empathy for others. This is shown later when she reads Macy's loneliness as a child.

In the later seasons of the first series, Phoebe gains the power of Empathy, the ability to read the emotions of others.

Fans of the first Charmed were thrown for a loop when oldest sister Prue Halliwell was killed off at the end of Season 3. Season 4 then introduced the Halliwell's long-lost younger half-sister, Paige Matthews.

The new show has one sister as a half sibling from the beginning. However, in a flip on the original, it is the eldest, Macy, who appears as a long-lost half sister.

The girl's mother, Marisol, was somehow separated from Macy when she was very young, leaving her to be raised by her father.

We know that Marisol knew where Macy was, having set in motion plans to get her a job at the University where she worked, and both Mel and Maggie attend.

What we don't know is exactly why Marisol was separated from her eldest daughter for so long. We'll have to keep watching the all-new Charmed to find out.
