5 Gamecube Games That Are Still Great

The Gamecube system might now be just for college dorm rooms, but back in the day it was a revolutionary system. While there are many bad Gamecube games (*cough* Shadow the Hedgehog *cough*) the best Gamecube games are still fun to play to this day, so here's a list of what I think are the best ones.

#5 Mario Kart Double Dash

At first glance, Double Dash seems a bit gimmicky, with the two rider mechanic being the big sell for this game. Many people thought that having two riders in a single car was a cheap way to rehash an old game. However, Double Dash is an improvement on the already solid prior Mario Kart game. The two person kart plays very smoothly and the new tracks are among the best in Mario Kart universe. A subtle, yet important, addition to Double Dash is the implementation of the character specific items. Each character has a special item that is unique to that character, and this adds to the importance of the character selection. Double Dash is arguably the best Mario Kart game and that's enough to add it to our list.

#4 Super Mario Strikers 

Mario is not known for making the best sports games. People are divided about Mario Tennis, Mario Baseball and other Mario sports games. The common complaint about it is how the game is realistic until a point. Mario sports games play like regular sports games but have star powers that adds the "Mario" element and that makes it unrealistic. The wackiness isolates the fans of "real" sports games but it's still realistic enough that it doesn't appeal to people that don't like sports games. This is where Strikers separates itself from the other sports games. Strikers throws realism out the window, it adds tackling, explosive items, Bowser's ability to tilt the arena and the craziness of Strikers makes it fun for everyone, regardless of their opinion on sports games.

#3 Sonic Adventure 2 Battle 

No, this list is not made up of only Mario games. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is the sequel to the first 3D sonic game, Sonic Adventure. The selling point to Sonic Adventure 2 was the ability to pick between the Hero and Dark storyline. In the first Sonic Adventure you picked a character and played out that characters enitre story. In Sonic Adventure 2, you either play Hero mode and play as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, or you play Dark mode and play as Shadow, Rouge, and Eggman. The ability to play as the villain was enough to get any kid excited, but the best part of Sonic Adventure 2 is the introduction of Shadow. Shadow is the coolest character introduced in the Sonic universe and this game is what made him the icon he is. Both Sonic and Shadow 's gameplay are incredibly fast paced and exhilarating. The solid gameplay of the other characters coupled with a surprisingly good story line makes Sonic Adventure 2 a must play for the Gamecube.

#2 Super Mario Sunshine

Sunshine is quite possibly the most surprising hit Gamecube ever had. If I told you a game about Mario cleaning up goo would be one of the greatest Mario games ever made you would call me crazy. But that's exactly what Sunshine is. It's also one of the first visually stunning games in the Mario collection, it paved the way for brighter more colorful games like Super Mario Galaxy. What makes Sunshine so great is how well you can control Mario. In previous Mario games if you moved the joystick a bit too far it would send Mario flying off in the wrong direction. The hover mode feature of F.L.U.D.D, the water pack on his back, makes moving Mario significantly more precise. In addition, Sunshine has 120 Shine Sprites you need to collect to complete the game. These Shine Sprites can be won in many different ways. The variety of enjoyable missions makes Sunshine one of the most enjoyable games to ever be on Gamecube.

#1 Super Smash Bros. Melee

I think everyone knew this game would be at the top of the list. This is the game that truly made Smash Bros great. The original N64 version was solid but Melee brought in new mechanics, most notably the use of a side B move, and brought in many new and great characters. The first Smash Bros had four unlockable characters, while Melee has 11. The creation of adventure mode in single player gameplay made unlocking secret players fun and less of a chore than it was in the original. The huge character selection with a smooth yet simple gameplay make this the undisputed best Gamecube game ever made.
