5 Reasons To Be Excited About The Future Of Supergirl

If you are like me, you try your best to keep up to date on Arrow, The Flash & Gotham but sometimes it's tough with tight schedules and just the overall busyness of life. Yet, we all get to breathe sighs of relief thanks to Hulu, Netflix and DVR's. Thankfully because of my DVR I was able to watch Supergirl the next day.

When I first heard that Supergirl was joining the television realm on CBS, I was for a lack of a better word, underwhelmed. I think overall what Netflix has done with Daredevil, Fox has done for Gotham and what The CW has done for Arrow and Flash have been astounding and truly breathtaking. Yet hearing that CBS was going to helm a character with the prestige of Supergirl, I was un-enthused about its prospects considering the history that anything entertainment related to Krypton has had (1988's Superboy, 1993's Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, 2001's Smallville - which I just never jumped on the bandwagon for). Overall it just seems as though it's been difficult to gain any traction for DC with their staple characters until The CW hit pay dirt with The Arrow.

Yet, I went into the pilot episode holding any preconceived notions aside, and I was impressed with what I saw, and after my second viewing I came up with a few reasons to be excited for what's yet to come on Supergirl.

Crossovers

CBS and CW are sister stations. Do you see where I'm going with this? - With the stations being partners of sorts, it wouldn't take much finagling to see a crossover event between Barry Alan, Oliver Queen & Kara Zor-El at some point as they are all in the same universal continuity. Also, considering that The CW originally wanted Supergirl in their line-up but couldn't afford the effects price-tag, I can't imagine them passing up on making it known that they are all within the same universe.

Acting Talent

Melissa Benoist has some serious chops when it comes to her own acting ability coming fresh off of Glee and as a part of the Academy Award-nominated film Whiplash. she definitely brings with her a great background. Add into the mix the other characters including Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, David Harewood as Hank Henshaw and my personal favorite in Mehcad Brooks as James "Jimmy" Olsen. (The Dean Cain & Helen Slater cameo's were also great.)

The Story Arc

CBS has already stated that this will be a 'crime procedural', which means that more than likely we'll see Kara beating off a different baddie each week, but eventually builds up to what is likely a cliffhanger between Kara and The Commander (Faran Tahir) or Astra, Kara's aunt. Needless to say it'll be a pleasant addition in terms of what most mainstream network shows have been missing: self-contained episodes that speak to a much larger story.

The Villains

It's still to be determined if this shot is a group of placeholders or if they'll join in the fray through the season, but regardless of their inclusion we're bound to see a few great DC villains cross Kara's path.

The Brightness

Supergirl is an entirely different hero in regards to the heroes that we've seen so far. Gotham, Daredevil, The Arrow and even The Flash at times have been criticized for their dark tones and Supergirl goes in the opposite direction. It's bright, it's peppy and it has a perky-ness that is rather refreshing.
