With every new fall season, there is always the inevitable unknowing fate of which of our favourites will return, which new shows will find a place on our PVRs and, which ones just won't make the cut to live out their full season potential. And while yes, there have been many amazing series that have lived long and full lives, there have also been others who were fed dust when what they truly deserved was a meal or at the very least, an edible arrangement.
So, with summer coming to an end, our favourites ready to make their season premier return and, a whole new Fall TV lineup ready and waiting to make its debut, I’ve decided to take a short trip down nostalgia lane to shine a light on TV sitcoms that really did deserve better and longer runs.
'Partners'
Starring Brandon Routh, Sophia Bush, Michael Urie and David Krumholtz, Partners was a CBS sitcom about two best friends, Louis and Joe, who work together at Joe’s architect office. Ali (Sophia Bush) is Joe’s fiancée while Wyatt (Brandon Routh) was Louis’ boyfriend who was so close to “becoming a Jewish doctor.” The sitcom was hilarious, warm and sadly, had too short of a life, only running from 2012 – 2013.
'Happy Endings'
Happy Endings was like Friends: The Next Generation. It followed the lives of six best friends living in New York, experiencing everything from love, break-ups, marriage and the all to occurring awkward moments. This ABC sitcom was a massive hit with its targeted audience, offered some of the best one-liners and sadly only saw a 2011 — 2013 life span.
Before Jesse Tyler Ferguson was Phil Dumphey’s broth-in-law on Modern Family, and long before Jon Bernthal was The Punisher, they were Ritchie and Duncan on CBS’s The Class. The show which also starred Jason Ritter, Lizzie Caplan and Sean Maguire was a show about old classmates all meeting up on the 20th anniversary of the day they met and continued to follow their new-found friendship. This sitcom only ran from 2006 – 2007.
Taking it back to the good days of the 90s, before Ryan Reynolds and Nathan Fillion were Deadpool and Castle, they were known as Johnny Donnelly and Berg on ABC’s Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place. I was 8 years old when the show first premiered, and it quickly became an absolute favourite. Reynolds conveyed his usual sarcastic, dry humour as he starred alongside Fillion, Traylor Howard and Richard Ruccolo from 1998 – 2001.
'Freaks and Geeks'
Only lasting a little less than a year, Freaks and Geeks was undoubatably a cult classic that had fans relating to the casts story lines and characters. Comprised of James Franco, Seth Rogan, Jason Segal, Linda Cardellini, and Busy Phillips, the show followed the chaotic, awkward and dramatic high school lives of students. It was to the United States, what Degrassi was to Canada (shout-out to Aubrey Graham).
Probably the most short-lived and underrated sitcom was Friends with Better Lives. Starring Kevin Connolly, James Van Der Beek, Brooklyn Decker and Zoe Lister - Jones, the show brought the laughs every week but sadly, didn’t even last an entire year on CBS, having premiered March 31, 2014 – May 26, 2014. They didn’t have to be played that dirty.
'Whitney'
If you’re like me, you were probably first introduced to the comedic genius of Whitney Cummings and Chris D’Elia on NBC’s Whitney. I’m not gonna lie, this one nearly had me laughing on the floor every week and remains, with all the above mentioned, one of my favourite sitcoms ever. Sadly, Whitney was only on from 2011 – 2013.
