A Complete Breakdown Of Adam Warlock's Comic Origins

For those of us who've been keeping up with Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 and all the latest details released in light of the world premiere, we know that a pivotal character was cut from the movie but will appear in #GuardiansOfTheGalaxyVol3, that character being Adam Warlock. James Gunn confirmed that the long-awaited arrival of Adam Warlock would be held off until after Avengers: Infinity War when the Guardians reassemble for their third adventure.

For some, the name Adam Warlock may not sound too familiar, and that's because he's only appeared in the comics. So, in anticipation of Warlock's arrival in Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 3, here's a complete breakdown of Adam Warlock's comic origin.

Warlock's Comic History

In the comics, Adam Warlock was created by the Beehive Collective, a group of scientific researchers obsessed with creating the pinnacle of human evolution. The Beehive believed they succeeded in their goal when they created Adam Warlock but were surprised to find their latest subject would immediately lash out against them.

When Warlock came into being, he awoke with a sense of awareness, recognized the Beehive's evil nature and destroyed their facilities before he escaped. After escaping, Warlock attempted to force Lady Sif into becoming his mate, something that Thor didn't take very well. Thor proceeded to beat Warlock nearly to death, forcing Warlock to retreat into a regenerative cocoon similar to the one glimpsed in #GuardiansOfTheGalaxy.

The cocoon that Warlock retreats into is found by another scientist known as the High Evolutionary, who kept Warlock's cocoon safe until he emerged from it. Upon emerging, Warlock was given the Soul Stone by the High Evolutionary and tasked with the mission of protecting his latest experiment: Counter-Earth.

Warlock's Adventures In Space

Adam Warlock spent a good amount of time protecting Counter-Earth, where he became known as the world's champion. After defeating Counter Earth's biggest threats, Warlock then took to the stars to seek out other worlds in need of protecting.

In his space travels, Warlock encountered a evil, twisted, future version of himself known as Magus. The two fought on several occasions, but Warlock proved victorious.

After Warlock's feud with Magus ran its course, Adam Warlock then turned his attention towards Earth, where he noticed a rogue rocket was flying off into the emptiness of space. The rocket didn't seem all that important until Warlock realized that Spider-Man was on board. Warlock rescued Spider-Man but was immediately approached by the Stranger.

After a brief battle with the Stranger, Warlock returned Spider-Man to Earth, before seeking out Thanos, who'd been plotting to destroy the universe. The actual moment that forced Warlock to intervene in Thanos's plan was when he found a dying Gamora.

Gamora attempted to take on Thanos by herself and wound up fatally injured. Before dying, Warlock found her and took her soul into his Soul Stone. The Soul Stone has the ability to house the souls of the fallen, giving the possessor of the stone all the knowledge of the soul it consumes. When Warlock took Gamora into the stone, he became informed of Thanos's mad plan to destroy the universe and sought out the #Avengers at Avengers HQ.

Once Warlock met with the Avengers and informed them of Thanos's evil plan, they took to the skies to stop him. The ensuing battle saw several Avengers fall, including Adam Warlock, whose soul was forced into the Soul Stone. After Warlock's soul retreated into the Soul Stone, Thanos absconded with Warlock's body to remove the stone from Warlock's body.

Adam Warlock Takes Shelter In The Soul Stone

In possession of the Soul Stone, Thanos thought he could make a large enough impact on the universe with the stone that Death would be forced to acknowledge him. Fortunately, he was abruptly stopped by Spider-Man and the Thing, who were possessed by the celestial beings Master Order and Lord Chaos.

When confronting Thanos, Spider-Man and Thing were able to wrestle the stone away from him long enough for Warlock's soul to escape from the stone. Warlock's soul then lunged at Thanos, transmuting his body into solid granite, killing the Mad Titan.

After defeating Thanos, Warlock spent a few years time in Soul World — the universe inside of the Soul Stone — until Thanos was revived and somehow gathered all of the Infinity Stones into the Infinity Gauntlet. His resurgence forced Warlock to emerge from the Soul Stone, along with that of Gamora and Pip, who'd been alongside him.

With Gamora and Pip's help, Warlock recruited Earth's remaining heroes to take on the Mad Titan once more. Their initial attempts proved futile, but Warlock was eventually able to claim the Infinity Gauntlet from Nebula, who'd betrayed Thanos to take it for herself.

With the Infinity Gauntlet in hand, Warlock then split up the Infinity Stones between himself, Gamora, Pip, Moondragon, Drax, and secretly gave the Reality Stone to Thanos, creating the Infinity Watch. Warlock lead the Infinity Watch on many missions to protect the universe.

How Will Warlock's Comic Origins Play Into The MCU?

After examining Warlock's comic origins, it's easy to see what elements could be incorporated into the MCU version, mainly Warlock's contributions to stopping Thanos. There's a possibility that Adam Warlock will lead the Infinity Watch in the Untitled Avengers 4, so Warlock's comic counterpart could be a major influence despite the #InfinityGauntlet story coming to a close during #InfinityWar.
