The name itself gives us an insight of the heartwarming series which is a family drama packed full of emotions. It starts off by showing a fact that, “According to Wikipedia, the average human being shares his or her birthday with over 18 million other human beings. There is no evidence that sharing the same birthday creates any type of behavioural link between these people. If there is, Wikipedia hasn’t discovered it for us yet.” This line sparks an interest within to how the story might be linked to the fact. We get introduced to the different characters celebrating the same birthday.

Jack Pearson (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca Pearson (Mandy Moore), the couple while giving birth to the triplets, lose one of their children. That same day they end up adopting a black child from the hospital who was previously left in the fire station. Kate (Chrissy Metz), who is overweight, is struggling with her eating disorder. Kevin (Justin Hartley) is an attractive hunky dude who stars in a sitcom where he has to be shirtless most of the times. Randall (Sterling K.Brown) finds his biological father who he was in search for since he was a child. The series deals with insecurity, family problems, self-doubts, sadness, joy, and many more emotions.

Each character in the series has different stories. Oftentimes it gets boring and confusing when many characters are presented on a show with different timelines, dealing with separate stories. But This Is Us doesn’t lose its flow. Each emotional scenes is portrayed with a deep affection, which most of the time won’t leave the viewers with a dry eye. The heavy dialogues and monologues makes it harder not to fall in love with the characters.

Toby (Chris Sullivan) meets Kate in a meeting where the focus is mainly on body image issues. Toby, portraying a cheerful guy who comes up with the most romantic gestures, shows the lovable side of Toby as a partner who understands the pain of weight loss. One of the important things in their relationship is that they are dealing with the same problem with each other’s support. The show definitely makes a huge impact on the audience with the character Kate. The realistic way the character is portrayed in a sitcom where she plays one of the main roles is very appreciated and much more relatable to the audience who suffers from weight issues.

William (Ron Cephas Jones) Randall’s biological father leaves a sadness amongst the audience when he dies from stomach cancer. William’s portrayal of his character shows his bonding with Randall and his family. The best, yet most emotional episode so far, was the trip to Memphis. The episode had equal shares of all the emotions.

Kevin’s portrays an actor who plays a soul-killing role in a terrible TV show. His anger and frustration of not being able to work in meaningful character makes him leaves the show. Later he joins the theatre to pursue his dreams, not as an attractive actor but an actor playing a passionate role. Amongst the whole season one, Kevin’s theatre sequences become quite monotonous. Randall who is a broker leads quite a stable life. His search for his identity since he was young remains one main part of his childhood, as he was raised by white parents. Randall’s scenes with his wife Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) gives us relationships goals. Their support for each other, the mutual understanding, stands out throughout the series. Jack and Rebecca being the parents of Kate, Kevin and Randall, set their priorities right as supportive parents. Their struggle as a couple, the insecurities between them, their fights as a couple, the feelings they share, strikes the right heartstrings. Jack's death remains one of the main focuses throughout the whole series. Overall, the series shows a roller coaster ride of emotions. When Kevin realises that Randall is going through a crisis in his life, he leaves his show midway for which he has been working hard for a long time and runs to his brother, the heart to heart moment they share afterwards makes me cry. The bonding between father-daughter, mother-son, siblings, and husband-wife makes it a show where a whole family would enjoy it together. It is the little moments of joy that really hooks people on the show till the end. The joys that general people root for are the ones that are evident in the show. Every single actor makes the representation of their character crystal clear. The dialogue is one of the most important factors of the show. The background score synchronises with every single scene pictured, which is able to give you goosebumps and also make you cry. The flow of the story is flawless, while it keeps the tone of the different stories constant. In the advanced world of technology, while most of us are busy staring at screens, this emotion-filled series would definitely make a family watch it together.

A still from the series showing the father-son bonding.
