In 1994, Roseanne broke new ground when it featured a lesbian kiss between Roseanne Barr and Mariel Hemingway. That kiss caused quite the stir among television viewers, and, Executive Producer Tom Arnold even claimed that ABC initially refused to air the episode. GLAAD urged the network to reconsider, and the kiss made it on air, albeit with a parental advisory warning.

Now the show is gearing up for a 2018 revival, and will once again tread new ground. A source has reportedly told Showbiz411 that the producers are looking to cast a gender creative child to star as David and Darlene's son, Mark. Their source alleges that Mark will be "sensitive and effeminate,” and they're looking for a young actor who “displays qualities of both young female and male traits.”

But Roseanne brought much-needed light to modern social issues, so it would come as no surprise if the long-running sitcom once again wades into waters that may be uncomfortable for some people. Showbiz 411's Roger Friedman hit the nail on the head with his summation.

"A gender fluid child, however, will likely get a lot of attention– for its bravery in telling what seems like a more common story in recent years and from the usual detractors."

In its nine-season run, Roseanne tackled issues that most people simply didn't want to talk about. Homophobia, racism, domestic violence, and teenage sex were just some of the topics that had some viewers squirming. The team behind the Roseanne revival have yet to comment on the rumors, but Roseanne Barr herself has retweeted several tweets about this latest rumor:

At this point, the speculation should be taken with a serious pinch of salt. However, if the rumors turn out to be true, they would certainly fit with Roseanne's reputation for pushing the envelope of representation on network television.
