King of Comedy is a motion picture from 1982 that stars Robert DeNiro, Jerry Lewis, and Sandra Berhardt. The film was directed by Martin Scorcese. The plot of the movie is want to be comedian Rupert Pupkin played by Robert DeNiro pursuing and becoming obsessed with talk show host Jerry Langford, played by Jerry Lewis. Rupert becomes obsessed with Jerry because he believes that he can give him his big break in show business. He has a friend named Masha played by Sandra Bernhardt, she is also obsessed with Jerry Langford but for entirely different reasons than Rupert's. Her reasons are she wants to have a romance with Jerry. Masha and Rupert are united by their infatuation with the talk show host.
Masha and Jerry
Their relationship is not a relationship, it is simply a couple of obsessed fans in desperate pursuit of the object of their obsessions, Jerry Langford. Like a predator stalks prey in the wild that is the way that Masha and Rupert stalk Jerry on a regular basis. She has been stalking Jerry longer than Rupert and so she helps him out in his own pursuit. Masha knows Jerry's entire daily routine and so she advises Rupert as to the right time to go approach Jerry and give him his comedy material. Rupert believes that he has an in with Jerry after he muscles his way into Jerry's limousine to remove Masha, who has thrown herself at Jerry. The movie is as relevant then as it is today, and these types of fan stalkings are more accessible using avenues of social media. Masha and Rupert decide to kidnap Jerry to make all of their sick fantasies come true: Masha's to sleep with Jerry and Rupert's to be able to go on the Jerry Langford show and do his comedy material before a studio audience and nationwide. They are successful in committing this felony in order to make their sick wants and desires into something real.
Rupert and Jerry
Rupert Pupkin is a want to be comedian who wants to be Jerry as the director, Martin Scorcese would say in an interview regarding the film. The two first meet when Rupert finds his way into Jerry's limo when he removes Masha from his limo and moves the crowd back as Jerry exits the building after a filming, which is odd when there are security spread all around. Rupert, in the beginning, unlike Masha, was just a struggling comedian who wanted to be a comic, give Jerry Langford his comedic demo, and get on his show. Eventually Rupert does become obsessed with Jerry. They had one encounter that was interpreted differently by both men. To Jerry it was an encounter with a fan who got into his limousine and so he has no choice but to entertain this person. To Rupert it was his "big chance" as he told Jerry, and to Rupert it was the equivalent of an elevator pitch. Rupert lives in a delusion where he also thinks that he and Jerry are friends or at least he has a fantasy that it is true. He doesn't realise Jerry really doesn't want anything to do with him or the material that he is trying to give to him.
After time after time of having various members of Jerry's organization tell him to go away, Rupert becomes more persistent. Rupert had one healthy relationship with a barmaid named Rita that he lost because of his sick obsession with Jerry Langford.
