'A Star Is Born'

Mesmerizingly Raw and Breathtakingly Beautiful

When I first heard that Lady Gaga was in a film with Bradley Cooper I thought, Huh? I wonder what that will be like?

I’d seen little of Lady Gaga’s acting prowess, dipping in to some of the later seasons of American Horror Story in which she’s featured but I have to be honest, I was pessimistic. I was surprisingly close minded, agreeing with people that said that some people need to remember what lane they drive in. If you’re a singer, do you have to make us suffer through your lackluster acting? Yeah, I thought. Does she have to do it all?

Well, I could not have been more wrong. A Star Is Born is a masterpiece. It is stunningly filmed, each frame so carefully considered and the use of juxtaposition, lighting, and music is just a culmination for brilliant viewing.

I felt invested from the moment the film started. It is a triumph for Bradley Cooper in his directorial debut but it is an absolute slam dunk for Lady Gaga. She is just so captivating to watch. I honestly feel like she takes you on her emotional journey and when she feels happy, you smile, and when she’s sad, you feel sad and there are highs and lows for you to get lost in throughout.

The storyline itself is a revamp of an old classic and the themes themselves are not dissimilar from TV shows and movies that we escape in these days but for some reason I felt that this was different. I was so glad I had made the decision to watch it on the big screen and I would highly recommend that anybody who hasn’t goes and sees it whilst you still can—this film isn’t meant for the small screen.

The ending I think is to be expected. You’ll notice some hints here and there, your mind will wander, and you’ll find yourself thinking I hope this isn’t about to happen. But you think it might and so if you’re anything like me you believe you’re prepared. This is all make believe anyway, isn’t it? Boyyyyy, was I wrong! After the first tear escaped I was powerless to control my slightly embarrassing stream of tears that ensued, glancing frantically over at my date hoping he couldn’t see that I was a complete mess (my smudged mascara that I didn’t see until I got to the bathroom probably have me away I’ll admit).

But I didn’t care! This film made me feel. And I mean really feel. And isn’t that what the cinema experience is meant to do? Transport you, entertain you and amaze you? Well, job done Mr Cooper. And Lady Gaga, I’ll never nod in agreement to anybody who claims that people just can’t do it all because wow, you really knocked it out of the park.
