All Of The DC Extended Universe Costumes Ranked From Worst To Best

DC's wardrobe choices are interesting to say the least, so let's take a look at how they stack up next to each other!

Adapting comic books is always a tricky task. You can get the right actor, the perfect director and have a stellar script, but it'll all be worthless if one thing misses the mark. One of the most important things to get right when bringing a character to the big screen is the costume.

In the comics, it defines the character. In the movie, however, it does so much more. It still has to accurately represent the character, but it also needs to be unique, match up with the rest of the universe, and convey the tone for the movie. Luckily, that's something DC has managed to do on the big screen as well as on television.

Despite the controversy of Batman v Superman, DC has done a pretty great job translating their characters' looks on to the silver screen. But comic book accuracy doesn't always ensure a great costume, so some sort of creative shake-up is necessary. DC's wardrobe choices are interesting to say the least, so let's take a look at how they stack up next to each other!

I'll be ranking the characters who we've seen a concrete design of — so no Flash and Cyborg yet. That means:

  • Batman
  • Superman
  • Wonder Woman
  • Aquaman
  • Joker
  • Harley Quinn
  • Enchantress
  • Rick Flag
  • Captain Boomerang
  • El Diablo
  • Slipknot
  • Katana
  • Deadshot
  • Killer Croc

14. Rick Flag

Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag.

It's not that Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag has a bad costume, it's just boring. There's only so many ways you can go with a government agent, and it shows. The character is just generic. Even in the comics, his look is a yellow shirt. Boring in the comics, boring on the screen.

13. El Diablo

Jay Hernandez as El Diablo.

Despite having one of the coolest powers on the team, El Diablo's costume falls a bit flat. We either see him in his standard prison fare or just a boring jacket. The only thing that separates the jacket from being a bargain bin pick-up is the stitched on "Diablo" patch. On a more positive note, the tattoos are amazing — and fit in line with the comics, too!

12. Slipknot

Adam Beach as Slipknot.

Slipknot is a lame character. Ropes are a lame specialty. That said, there's not many ways the costume designer could've made him look cool. But while he may knot (sorry) look "cool," he looks positively ridiculous. And that's a good thing, especially when your skill set is based on ropes.

11. Killer Croc

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc.

Killer Croc's look in Suicide Squad is one of the weirdest decisions in the movie. Nothing is glaringly bad — some of it is even wicked cool — but it's definitely intriguing. While some fans may have trouble with the scaled down version of the villain, he looks fine in the trailers — not that anyone's focusing on how long his legs are.

10. Captain Boomerang

Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang.

With a character like Captain Boomerang, there has to be a fair bit of redesigning for his movie counterpart. You simply can't throw a bright blue, boomerang-wielding dude into a gritty movie with muted colors. While most parts of the look stayed in one form or another — the iconic hat and coat for one — the rest of it was tweaked beyond immediate recognition. Still, the boomerangs and "Captain" coat reminds us that this is the same guy. He's muted, kind of boring, and radically changed, but the same guy nonetheless.

9. Aquaman

Jason Momoa as Aquaman.

The first photo we got of Jason Momoa as Aquaman was breathtaking. As in, it was so majestic that it took your breath away, but also this guy looks like he could — and would — strangle you. Behind the scenes and sans filter, Momoa looks as happy as he could be in the Aquaman costume.

Even though the gold armor and green pants are nice touches, the outfit generally feels like it's missing something. That's for now at least, because we can look forward to a more detailed costume in next year's Justice League, where he'll have scaled chest armor and green pants.

8. Joker

Jared Leto as The Joker.

If there's one thing that Suicide Squad fans can't agree on, it's Jared Leto's Joker. Most expect that he'll do a great job, but that's not what they're worried about. What they worry about is the character's design. From the shiny grills to the much debated "Damaged" tattoo, some people just can't get on board with a Joker that looks more like a Joker fanatic. I find myself firmly in the middle, so that's why Joker's in the middle of this list.

7. Enchantress

Cara Delevingne as Enchantress.

I almost didn't put Enchantress on this list because she's not wearing much of anything, but my strict adherence to my own rules didn't allow it. So in context, Enchantress' costume is fine. Nothing says "feral witch lady" like unkempt hair, tattoos, chains, and a skimpy stone bikini. Out of context, it's pretty disturbing. It's clear Enchantress is straddling the line between PG-13 and R with her outfit, and so much as her bending over could be enough to push this into Deadpool territory.

6. Harley Quinn

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.

Harley Quinn is a hard character to transition — jester suits don't always work, as it turns out — but the team behind Suicide Squad did an admirable job. They maintained the fundamentals behind the character like the alternating color scheme and tweaked it to match their needs. And so our first cinematic Harley was born, with and pink and blue hair, nails, makeup, and even a jacket. Fitted with gold jewelry to top it all off, this is a great way to go for Harley (even if the shorts are a bit too short).

5. Deadshot

Will Smith as Deadshot.

Deadshot's costume could take the number one spot based on detailing alone, but still lacks an unknown quality. That's not to say the outfit doesn't have tons of merits, ranging from the awesome mask, to the self-serious phrase, to the target over his heart. Weirdly enough though, the eye-piece is on the opposite side. There's probably no reason for it.

4. Superman

Henry Cavill as Superman.

The most iconic superhero ever, Superman's costume can never be altered beyond immediate recognition. Luckily, the DCEU's take on him is the perfect blend of old and new. The emblem is big, the color scheme is the same, and the material looks amazingly Kryptonian. And as an added bonus, Supes finally puts his underwear where it belongs.

3. Katana

Karen Fukuhara as Katana.

Katana's costume wins on every front. It's fairly modest (the most covered female on the Squad, actually), comic accurate, and cool as hell. Sure, Harley Quinn has a bat and Deadshot has guns, but Katana walks around with two swords (or katanas, if you will) strapped to her at all times. Katana also takes the cake for the most accurate member of the Squad, carrying over all the important elements from the page.

2. Batman

Ben Affleck as Batman.

While every iteration of the character was unique, Ben Affleck's Batman takes the cake as the best costume. The hulking, aged version of Bruce Wayne had a suit to match, equipped with scratches, tears, and marks. The cowl is great, the ears are perfectly short, and the emblem would strike fear into the heart of any criminal.

1. Wonder Woman

Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.

Did you expect to see someone else up here? No other costume in the DC Universe exemplifies elegance — and a warrior spirit — more than Wonder Woman's. The armor is the perfect shade of the required colors, the tiara fits in place without looking like a burden, the Lasso of Truth makes an appearance, all while a sword and shield remind you not to mess with her. On top of that, Gal Gadot's natural beauty and fierce attitude strikes the perfect balance between demigod princess and Amazonian warrior. It is, in every sense of the word, perfect.
