The 1994 movie Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, the story of a goofy detective with an affinity for animals — on a journey to find the Miami Dolphins' missing mascot — grossed over $100 million worldwide and rocketed Jim Carrey to comedy stardom. Its success spawned a sequel in 1995, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, which proved to be even more successful.

Now, 22 years later, Morgan Creek Productions (which is changing its name to Morgan Creek Entertainment Group) is looking to resurrect the movie ... but possibly in spirit only.

According to David Robinson, the president of Morgan Creek, the company is open to either a movie or a TV revival. Robinson told Deadline:

"We wanted to do a mainstream theatrical production relaunch. Because it’s episodic in nature, about a pet detective, it also lends itself to a traditional single-camera series franchise.”

The biggest question is whether Jim Carrey would reprise one of his most famous roles. That's uncertain, although he'd be welcomed back. Robinson clarified that the concept of the movie could involve Carrey handing over the baton; Morgan Creek's head of content, Barbra Wall, likewise indicated that there was a possibility of "a long-lost son or daughter of Ace possibly showing up at his doorstep and taking over."

However the company chooses to reboot the pet detective, fans have already taken to social media in a divisive battle. While many are up for a new movie, as long as Jim Carrey is the star, others don't want a good thing ruined. Regardless, if the movie proceeds, it will be difficult to capture the magic of the original.
