App Review: "Applike"

"What the - This WORKS?!"

So, I'm sure by now, anyone who's gone through a game and has had to sit through a commercial or an ad to get that bonus boost has seen the commercial for it. The little star, bouncing around between games and across the on-screen text to a boppin' beat that you can't help but want to download, claiming that you can make money from something as simple as playing games!

Though, with things like this, immediately my skepticism kicks in, followed by the typical thoughts that are accompanied with those sort of apps. “Suuuure, and I'm the queen of Siam. All it will take is just my mother's maiden name and the first 16 digits of my credit card number.”

But when a friend visited and was telling me about it, my skepticism sort of went away. Not entirely. There was still a little bit of it especially when it would come to 'cashing out' when you needed to, but we would see when it came to that.

So, I downloaded the app. It was pretty painless. You could sign in through Google or through a regular email, and then you'd immediately just get tossed in.

How does it work? So, you're brought to the main screen, one that shows different apps (the pretty standard ones: Mobile Strike, Facebook Bingo games, Farmville, etc), and how many 'mCoins' that you would get for playing it (Lots of, plenty, some, a few).

So, you click whatever app it is that you wanted to download (for this example, let's go with Mobile Strike), and it would take you to the Play Store page for it. You download the game, install it, and then just start playing it, and it's as simple as that.

As you play through the game, you'll notice a small window pop on your screen occasionally stating how many mCoins you get (example, +53 mCoins!), but that's about it. I've gone through and played the games for as long as I can, so I have yet to test if the application needs to either simply be RUNNING, or if it has to be PLAYED and running, but it seems like the latter of the two sort of ruins the whole thing, doesn't it?

So, I downloaded one of the games and started to play. After about 4 minutes, I noticed a '+77 mCoins!' pop up on my screen, so that portion at least worked. So, I played the game until I had enough saved up to do a 'cash out'. Now, I cannot verify this, but I believe that the payout options that you can get (The commercial said you could exchange it for Amazon gift cards, Google Play Store gift cards, or PayPal money) are different depending on the region that you are in. So, for me being in Canada, I was only able to do PayPal transactions.

So, I clicked the button that said "4950 mCoins = 0.50$ CDN). So for about 5000 of their coins, you can get 50 cents Canadian. So, why not. It's only 50 cents, and I figure if it messes up, then I can just dispute if there was a transaction that happened without my permission through PayPal.

So, I enter my PayPal address into the box provided, and underneath it says 'Upon entering the email, you agree that the above email is correct. It can take up to 10 business days for the transaction to clear. If there are any spelling errors in the email, you will not receive a refund of the amount!'. A little bit daunting, especially if you are in a hurry to try and write everything out, but it means that you do need to pay attention and make sure that if you are doing a PayPal transaction that you pay attention to what is written.

Final Verdict: Looks a little bit on the fake side from the first glance, but half decent once you get into it. App selection is a bit average. Would recommend getting it if you have a tablet with a LOT of space on it to use.
