Are Marvel and Sony Still Developing an Aunt May Movie?

There was a flurry of rumors that Sony was going to create a universe consisting of all Spider-Man characters, including an Aunt May solo film without a Spider-Man at all.

Late 2014 was a wild ride for Spider-Man fans as Sony loosened their grip of the titular character and started sharing rights with Marvel Studios and an amazing partnership was born from the ashes of The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. Before that though, there was a flurry of rumors surrounding how Sony was going to create a universe consisting of all Spider-Man characters; something we're seeing with Sony's upcoming Venom, Black Cat and Silver Sable films.

Before the celebrating came a lot of concern among the fanbase as so many different movie ideas were coming from all the Sony email leaks and one of the most infamous of them all was a supposed Aunt May solo film without a Spider-Man in it at all. It was assumed that the film would follow a younger May as she works as a spy.

This sounds like a terrible idea and complete variation to the character from the comics, but at this point it seems pointless to worry about the source material with Marisa Tomei's version of the character taking so many liberties. Unless there is a great idea and script involved then I don't see how this would be worth making.

We all assumed this idea was dead and buried once Marvel Studios had control of the character, but last month Tomei said she'd be "all for" her own solo movie when asked about taking May for a solo ride. This was of course just assumed to be a fun little quote, but now this has surfaced again on the Conan as Conan O'Brien began campaigning for an Aunt May solo movie starring Tomei.

While a quick interview quote is one thing, this became a major talking point for the Conan show and once again Tomei was interested in the idea. Movie studios use talk shows as marketing tools to promote their movies so every question and interaction is scripted for the most part, and this seemed like one of those scripted moments.

Could Marvel have been gauging reactions to an Aunt May solo movie?

It's speculation at this point, but maybe Sony is still interested in that Aunt May movie and if their Venom ventures work out this could end up being part of the Universe. They casted a younger Aunt May with enough star power to shoulder her own movie for SOME reason.

While a spy movie starring Aunt May is silly, perhaps an Aunt May movie could work from a different perspective.

What about an Aunt May and Uncle Ben romantic comedy?

I won't lie, a film taking place before most of the events of the #MarvelCinematicUniverse centering around Ben and May's relationship sounds pretty interesting to me. While it wouldn't be the most action packed adventure we've ever seen from Marvel, it could be a heart warming tale.

Tom Holland recently confirmed the fan theory that the young man attempting to imitate Tony Stark in Iron Man 2 was in fact a young Peter Parker, so what if the film took place around this time? Focusing on two normal civilians who are attempting to adjust to a post-Iron Man world and take care of their recently orphaned nephew at the same time. It could be a rare look into the lives of just regular people trying to live normal lives while the chaos of the MCU is exploding around them and how they adapt to the new #superhero world.

The Amazing Spider-Man franchise attempted to make a plot point out of Peter's parents and show the type of trauma his parents leaving him could've caused. This was one of the best parts of this former franchise and I'd love to see an entire movie dedicated to the topic.

It could be a movie full of laughs, cries and just an interesting new side of both the MCU and the Spider-Man mythos.
