When Season 5 of Arrow drew to a close, fans were left wondering if Malcolm Merlyn really did take his daughter's place on a land mine. Was the Dark Archer gone forever? It certainly seemed that way since actor John Barrowman told his fans a heartfelt goodbye and expressed his disappointment at leaving the Arrowverse as well as his gratitude for the past five years.

Fans were heartbroken as the Dark Archer had found his way into our hearts in spite of his schemes and questionable choices. John Barrowman made Malcolm Merlyn a character we loved to hate, and, at times, a character we just loved. We didn't want to lose him, and as it turns out, we may not have to.

When wanted to know if Merlyn had actually died, if he would ever come back, and executive producer Marc Guggenheim offered a bit of news that excited all of us.

"That's up to John. We told John when we called him to tell him about the events of the finale, every single person on all the shows has come back in some shape or form. We've got flashbacks, we've got time travel, we've got parallel universes. Goodbye is never goodbye. He has an open invitation to return to the show any time he wants."

Viewers weren't the only ones thrilled at the invitation, as Barrowman revealed on his Instagram page.

All the handsome actor is asking for is an amazing storyline, and Arrow writers have already proven they are up to that challenge. After all, they did leave the door open for Merlyn's return. We didn't see his body on Lian Yu, which means the archer can return without the need for flashbacks or dream sequences. The Dark Archer can rise again.

There's no doubt a sudden appearance will make for riveting television, since Thea is in the process of mourning her "deceased" father even though she never really thought of him as much more than a sire. With plenty of time to realize what Merlyn brought to her life, Thea may even be happy to see him. The fans certainly would!

The challenge has been issued. Let's hope the writers accept it and return Malcolm Merlyn to the Arrowverse where he belongs.
