'Arrow': Will Black Siren Remain A Villain Now That Black Canary Is Suiting Up?

When Arrow began looking for a replacement for Black Canary, fans knew that, eventually, the new superhero would suit up and become an official part of the team. That didn't mean that everyone had to like it.

Arrow's sixth season will debut a new Black Canary suit with Dinah Drake officially taking on the mantle left vacant after Laurel Lance's death in Season 4. And according to executive producer Wendy Mericle in an interview with EW, Black Siren — the evil doppelgänger — isn't on board with it:

"I’ll just say this: She’s probably not going to like it very much. [Laughs] I mean, I don’t know how much research she’s done about her Earth-1 Laurel, but I would have to say that I think there’s going to be some sparks flying there."

The two metahumans had a brief showdown toward the end of Arrow's season, and Black Siren made it very clear that the Black Canary wasn't going to be replaced:

With #KatieCassidy returning to #Arrow as a series regular in Season 6, there's no doubt that there will be additional confrontations between her and the new #BlackCanary, but will Black Siren be more than just another villain?

When #BlackSiren appeared earlier in Season 5, Oliver Queen thought there was some hint of Laurel Lance inside of the evil Earth-2 version, and he wanted to help her find that spark of goodness. But does it really exist, or is the darker side of Laurel Lance here to stay?

Wendy Mericle has said that the subject of redemption has to come up, she told TVLine that doesn't necessarily mean it's going to take:

“I don’t know if there’s any question about whether or not the [idea] of redemption will come up; it has to. Her father is there. Oliver is there. Everyone is going to be asking whether or not it’s possible to find a little piece of Laurel, the Laurel Lance they knew and loved, in there somewhere. ... I think she’s interesting as a [villain]. Black Siren is a badass.”

Fans are divided on whether or not they want a redeemed version of Laurel Lance, as her evil side is captivating. As a villain, Laurel Lance doesn't have to contend with the conscience that the heroes do, nor does she answer to anyone. The thought of watching her do battle with Team Arrow does have its intrigue.

The writers may eventually have a different course planned out for her, but if Black Siren is destined to become a force of good, one would think it would take more than one season to redeem her. Which means we've got plenty of bad Laurel Lance on the way.
