The First Ten White and Purple Precure

Back in 2004, Futari Wa Precure first aired and introduced the first White-themed heroine in the franchise with Cure White. Fighting evil with her partner, Cure Black, the pair founded a legacy of heroes lasting over 15 years and still counting. This has created many heroines all sporting their own colour and powers to fight the forces of evil. Over those 15 years, Purple and White Cures have become common colours to see on the team. Thanks to the fans over at the Precure.Livejournal, they have been voting to cast their choices for the top five heroines in these colours.

One of the few survivors of Trump Kingdom after the forces of Selfish attacked and destroyed the land, Cure Sword appeared in Doki Doki! Pretty Cure (2013). She was a popular idol and her singing voice was praise by Princess Marie Ange of the Kingdom. When she arrived in Japan she became an idol in hopes of finding her Princess with her singing voice. Feeling responsible for the loss of the Kingdom, Makoto was cold and uninterested in working with the other three Precure. However, soon she recognised they had the same mission as her and joined the Doki Doki team becoming the sword in their fight against Selfish.

Her initial attack, "Holy Sword," allowed her to fire dozens of purple energy daggers at her target to shred it to pieces. Her fighting style matched her attack, as she was direct and powerful in her combat style. She also used a lot of grace and elegance to enable her to dodge incoming attacks from the enemy. When she got her Love Heart Arrow her attack was upgraded to a more powerful form, "Sparkle Sword," which fired energy arrows out of a crossbow.

With this new power, she started making strives in uncovering what had happened to her princess, which surprised everyone when the princess had been splintered into three separate beings. Driving forward to end Selfish and restore Trump Kingdom, the Cures gained access to a new item, the Magical Lovely Pad. This gave Cure Sword her ultimate attack, "Sword Hurricane."

This made her magical swords fly in all directions, making it a truly deadly attack. This allowed them to push Selfish's forces to the limits and finally bring down the Selfish King. Cure Sword made peace with her lost past, but aimed to make a new future for her Kingdom. Outside of the season, Cure Sword is one of the few Precure to receive an exclusive attack that only appeared in the film.

"Ultima Sword" had Cure Sword turn her arm into an actual sword to lay the finishing blow. She follows the Purple Cure stereotype of being an outsider and loner, but we are given reasons why with her backstory. This is why fans loved Cure Sword. Her pain and reactions were believable, and so, fans voted this Purple Cure into fifth place.

This music loving baking Cure, Cure Rhythm, appear in Suite Pretty Cure♪ (2011) which took the Cures back to their roots. Starting off as old childhood friends who had not spoken for years, the pair were thrown into the hero spotlight and had to stop the forces of Minor Land. Much like the original duo, Cure Black and Cure White, Cure Melody and Rhythm always transformed together with one providing the power and the other the grace and agility. Their initial attack was even a homage to the original series with their pair uniting through their hands to unleash true power.

The attack "Passionato Harmony"required the pair to truly strengthen their friendship as they needed to be synced perfectly to perform the attack. But when Cure Melody acquire her Miracle Belltier, Cure Rhythm started to doubt her abilities as a Cure. While she tried to find her way back on the path to victory, she threw herself into her cooking club and did her best to keep Hibiki away from her freshly baked cakes. While it took her some time to see she was just as powerful as her partner, she did manage to unleash the Fantastic Belltier, granting her a solo attack.

With her attack "Precure Music Rondo"she was able to entrap her target in a circle of yellow energy which would tighten on the foe and explode. This allowed the duo to fight harder against Minor Land, but this caused their enemy to increase their efforts. This is when the mysterious Cure Muse advised them in separating their weapon into two segments for new attacks, "Precure Miracle Heart Arpeggio" and "Precure Fantastic Piacere."

Learning the tricks behind their weapons, they even exchanged them for a new power and continued to push Minor Land back. When the duo were joined by Cure Beat and Cure Muse it resulted in them only getting stronger. With the Healing Chest now on their side, the team had an ultimate attack which they used to defeat Noise and Minor Land once and for all. Fans love Kanade as she refuses to be quiet and will challenge others when she disagrees. Another Cure duo is the duo of Cure Macherie and Cure Amour from HUGtto! Pretty Cure (2018). However, this Purple Cure had a very different start to other Cures. Firstly, she worked for the evil Criasu Corporation that was hell bent on stopping time. Yes, a former villain turned heroine is not new to the franchise, but Ruru is the only android Cure. She was made to work for Criasu and would analysis the data on the Cures to find weaknesses and ways to defeat them. But when she started forming friendships with them she started to break her programming and became their ally instead.

One friend she made was the young Emiru and the pair dreamed on becoming Cures together. The big problem they faced was only a single PreHeart remained, meaning only one of them could become a Cure. In good old Precure tradition, a miracle occured and the pair became the Precures of Love, Cure Macherie and Cure Amour. They joined the team and used they attacks "Heart Song" and "Heart Dance." However, they were new to the battle and were weaker than their team mates. They both held a love for music, which resulted in their Twin Love Guitars being created and an increase in power.

Now with their combined attack, "Twin Love Rock Beat," the duo started making their mark on the team, but their personal lives had many issues for them to work through. For Ruru she had to face the consequences of brainwashing Hana's mother to infiltrate the Cures and how to deal with emotions that were starting to come to her. The biggest emotional obstacle for Ruru was facing her father, Doctor Traum, the man who had created her.

Cure Amour's journey is yet to finish, but she has stated that when the battle is over she will be saying goodbye to her team and returning to her time. This is bound to create a tear-jerking finale for fans which will only add to the love they have for her. With her unique personality, way of doing things and journey she has taken, fans have fallen for this Purple Cure and cast her in third place.

Standout Episodes:

  • Episode 13 - "The Transfer Student Is Fresh and Mysterious!"
  • Episode 17 - "Noise of Sorrow... Farewell, Ruru"
  • Episode 20 - "Cure Macherie and Cure Amour! Hooray Hooray! The Pretty Cure of Love!"
  • Episode 22 - "Our Song of Love! Let It Reach! Twin Love Guitar!"
  • Episode 40 - "Ruru's Papa!? Amour, That Is..."

One of the original two Cures, Cure White first appeared in Futari Wa Precure (2004). The original duo were unlike any other Cures that would follow, as they must be together to transform and to attack. While other have relied on partners to transform, all the others do receive their own solo attacks. Cure White is the agile and graceful fighter of the this duo and is a master of throwing her enemies off balance and using their own strength against them. When she joins hands with her partner, Cure Black, they access their attack "Marble Screw."

She was also the brains behind the duo, she had a keen interest in science and often looked for answers. What nearly broke her bonds with her partner was her inhibitions when it came to a childhood friend, Fujipi, as Cure Black had a crush on him. Honoka's friendship with him often got her in trouble from Cure Black and she would have to work on apologising and fixing their friendship. But when Cure White was nearly consumed by the Dark Zone, Cure Black burst into action to save her best friend and partner. Their bond is undeniable and resulted in the pair getting a sequel series, Futari Wa Pretty Cure Max Heart (2005), after they defeated the Evil King and his Dark Zone.

Standout Episodes:

  • Episode 05 - "Serious Trouble! A Desperate Pisard"
  • Episode 08 - "The End of Pretty Cure! Isn't It Too Soon!?"
  • Episode 10 - "Honoka Explodes! A Wonderful Birthday"
  • Episode 21 - "A Shocking Date! Kiriya's True Identity"
  • Episode 42 - "We Are One! Nagisa and Honoka's Powerful Bond"

Now with a boosted level of power, Cure White returned to stop the Evil King from resurrecting and reforming the Dark Zone. With a new younger ally, Shiny Luminous, Cure White offered a nurturing friendship to the new hero. This is clearly Honoka learning these skills from her grandmother, who often gave her advice when she was really troubled. It was even hinted that her grandmother knew the pair were the Pretty Cure, but it was never confirmed.

While compared to many Cures, Cure White never really alters from start to finish, but then that's why fans still love her to this day. She portrays intellect but social awkwardness, which is a description of a someone we all know. However, she also creates a contrast from her normal life to superhero life. For such a soft-spoken young woman, she turns into a fast and accurate fighter on the battlefield. She is one of the originals resulting in why fans still love her 15 years on, and how she ended up in second place.

Standout Episodes:

  • Episode 01 - "We Are Still Pretty Cure~! The Legend Continues Through Thick and Thin!"
  • Episode 09 - "You Won't Interfere! Honoka's Most Precious Day"

Heartcatch Pretty Cure! (2010) actually started with Cure Moonlight in a battle against the evil Dark Precure and Professor Sabaku. In the first five minutes of the show this Purple Cure was defeated and seemingly perished in the battle. However, she had actually survived and was revealed to be Yuri, a 17-year-old who became Cure Moonlight three years prior to the show. Through her pride, she had failed in her mission to find her father and saw her fairy partner Cologne destroyed. When the new Cures were not strong enough to defeat Dark Precure, Yuri begged the Great Heart Tree for a miracle, to allow her to become Cure Moonlight once again.

Now back and part of the team, Cure Moonlight held many attacks and powers to support the new younger heroes. The four of them faced a test to obtain more power, facing dark counterparts of themselves. Yuri defeated her doppelgänger with ease and earned her Super Silhouette form. This caused Sabaku to increase Dark Precure's power to a new level. Things only got worse for the team when Dune arrived and turned the entire planet into a desert, forcing the heroes into space for a final battle. Aiming to end the threat once and for all, Cure Moonlight had one final battle against Dark Precure and discovered Sabaku was her father who went missing years ago.

Knowing Dark Precure and her must fight to the end, Cure Moonlight pushed herself to new level of power, thanks to what she has be taught working with the younger heroes. However, in this victory came defeat as she discovered that her father had created Dark Precure from a piece of Yuri. Having defeated her younger sister, Cure Moonlight headed to take on Dune with her father, but even that met with tragedy as her father was killed protecting her. This nearly turns Yuri away from the path of love and into hate. Thankfully, Cure Blossom was ready to save her hero from falling from grace a second time and the pair headed into the final battle against Dune.

The team succeeded in defeating the forces of Dune and saved the world from being turned into an endless desert. For a heroine what only appeared in just over a dozen episodes, Cure Moonlight has become an icon within the Pretty Cure franchise. The heroines always reach their happy ending and fulfill their mission. While Cure Moonlight did save the world, she is stained with tragedy from start to finish. Losing her father, then her powers and fairy partner, then to regain her powers, only to have to kill her younger sister and watch her father die all resulted in a true tragic heroine. Despite all her power she proved you can not always save those you love and is why fans voted her in first place.

Do you agree with the fans? Was their a White of Purple Cure you love that didn't make the list?
