Ashamed of Being Human

Are aspects of a personality allowed to struggle?

When Fairy Godmother wasn't spending time with Roman, she could sense those in need of guidance. She wasn't the type to tell people exactly what to do, but rather give them an extra push in the right direction if they needed it. Case in point, she could sense that the Light Sides were in pain. Sure, the current Dark Sides were in pain, too, but the pressure from the reputation and expectations made things harder for the Light Sides. She could tell that they were basically experiencing the same fears and struggles, they were just all painted differently: They couldn't completely fit their roles all the time and they feared it would hurt Thomas and each other. On the outside, nothing was too off, but they felt the same shame and fear on the inside. They were scared of not doing their jobs properly, they were scared of being... human.

She waved her wand to get an image of what the Light Sides were all doing. She could see Logan and Roman playing chess, Patton baking, and Virgil roaming the halls while scrolling through his phone. She knew they were all singing the same tune deep down and she guessed that them singing it out loud would get them to talk. She waved her wand and pointed it to her makeshift window.

"Everywhere I turn, I hurt someone," Patton sang, while stirring.

"But there's nothing I can say to change the things I've done," Virgil continued, much to his surprise.

"I'd do anything within my power, I'd give everything I've got," Virgil sang some more, but with an expression like he was talking to somebody else.

"But the path I seek is hidden from me now," Roman muttered as he was deciding his next piece to move.

"Brother bear, I let you down. You trusted me, believed in me, and I let you down," Logan faintly sang while removing his glasses to rub his eyes.

"Of all the things I hid from you, I cannot hide the shame," Patton and Virgil sang simultaneously, thus causing the duo to slowly look at each other in surprise.

"And I pray someone, something will come to take away the pain," Roman joined the emotional duo.

As the two approached the prep from their spot, Logan expressed frustration as he continued to rub his eyes.

"There's no way out of this dark place," the nerd belted and clung to his head.

"No hope, no future," Roman and Virgil sang together.

"I know I can't be free," all four of them sang in unison.

"But I can't see another way," Virgil sang with tears, causing his makeup to run.

"And I can't face another day," Roman declared.

The two were about to head to their individual rooms, but the paternal figure shouted for them to come back. They all looked at each other and nodded as if in a silent understanding that they're not flawless, they're not molds, but they're not alone. The four of them joined hands and formed a circle. They took a deep breath with their eyes closed before saying, "No matter what you're going through, I am so proud of you," in enough unison to sound like Thomas talking to them. They opened their eyes and found it better that there wasn't just one person there for each of them.

"I know it's hard, but you found somehow," Patton began to sing.

"To look into your heart and to forgive me now," Virgil continued while squeezing the hands of his family.

"You've given me the strength to see just where my journey ends," Roman announced.

"You've given me the strength to carry on," Logan declared with as much pride as in the Crofters musical number.

"I see the path from this dark place, I see my future," they all sang together without letting go, "Your forgiveness has set me free, oh, and I can see another way. I can face another day! I see the path, I can see the path. I see the future."

They smiled at each other, not from the idea that all their problems are gone (they have a long way to go), but from the knowledge that they can own up to their struggles and not feel like the black sheep. Fairy Godmother smiled while looking through her makeshift window. Now, if only she could easily conjure the right path for the Dark Sides.
