Attack on Titan Season 3 is upon us and just two episodes in, the dark fantasy anime series—based on the popular manga of the same name by Hajime Isayama—is providing fans with even more gripping action and intrigue.

This time, our Survey Corps heroes discover that a deadlier threat is not Titan-sized but human-sized. And they are baffled as to why, after all the hard work they've done in protecting the community, they are being hunted down by their own kind.

After their activities beyond the walls are frozen, the Scouts have to deal with the murder of their informant Pastor Nick, flee from a mysterious group hell-bent on kidnapping Eren Yeager and Historia Reiss (the cadet formerly known as Krista Lenz), and escape the clasp of the Military Police who are now seemingly led by a cold-blooded gun-for-hire from Captain Levi Ackerman’s past, Kenny the Ripper.

“From now on, we'll be fighting humans too, and not just Titans,” the wise and skillful Levi instructs Mikasa Ackerman (no relation, as of now) to inform the Scouts, as the young team has to adjust to exterminating fellow military members in order to save themselves.

Here are three of the hostile human factions the Survey Corps have to deal with in Attack on Titan Season 3.

Military Police’s First Interior Squad

Of the military's three branches, the Military Police (MP) are the ones that guard the royal family in the innermost wall and hence usually have the most carefree of duties.

In Season 3, Squad Commander Hange Zoe meets two members of the MP’s First Interior Squad who claim they are investigating Pastor Nick’s murder. Hange, however, suspects that they are the ones who actually tortured and killed the clergyman who was hiding in the Scouts’ barracks in Trost district.

Before long, the Survey Corps, who were hiding out in a country house, have to run for their lives when the MP descends upon their hideout. Someone has been snitching on the Scouts’ every move. Could there be a mole among them, and if so, who could it be?

Kenny the Ripper

First seen in the Season 3 trailer, fans finally get to see Kenny in his full evil gunslinger glory. Guaranteed to be the #1 Bad Guy in the new season, we learned from Levi that Kenny the Ripper is not an urban legend as most citizens believed as he did indeed gun down 100 MP officers and hence the nickname.

Why the cop killer is now leading the Military Police begs an answer but then Levi also shockingly reveals that he grew up with Kenny and thus the latter is his guardian-cum-mentor of sorts.

Their past ties didn’t stop the sadistic Kenny from hunting his former ward down and Episode 2 has what is arguably the most absorbing fight scene we have ever seen the usually cool-calm-and-collected Levi involved in.

The cleanliness-obsessed dude is super charismatic and judging by the Attack on Titan Season 3 teaser posters on the show's Twitter account, it appears that Levi will have a much bigger part to play in the new season, with more showdowns with Kenny in store.

Rod Reiss

After Eren and Historia are eventually kidnapped by Kenny and his forces, Levi and Hange—acting as ruthless as their adversaries—capture and torture Djel Sannes, one of the MP responsible for the murder of Pastor Nick, to find out where the pair could be.

They however discover something more startling - that Historia is the illegitimate daughter of Rod Reiss, the true ruler of the walled city, with the present king merely a puppet. Why does Rod need to kidnap both Historia and Eren? Could he be the mastermind behind the Titans within the walls? Or does he intend to use Eren in his Titan form for his own purposes?

Titans remain a Threat

If there’s any indication that humans are the new threat in Attack on Titan Season 3, it’s the fact that not a single hostile Titan was seen in action in the first two episodes. But following up from what Levi and Commander Erwin learned at the end of Season 2—that the giant humanoid creatures could actually be transformed from human beings—the main crux is to find out if there is a human mastermind behind the rise of the Titans.

The good news is that Season 3 will have 24 episodes to provide answers to all the questions—and whether or not the former cadet trio of Ymir (intelligent Titan), Reiner Braun (Armored Titan) and Bertholdt Hoover (Colossal Titan) will get a chance to redeem themselves.

Attack on Titan Season 3 is available on Crunchyroll, Funimation, and Hulu in the U.S. and Aniplus in Asia.
