What Makes It Work? – Nailed It!: The Baking Contest We’ve Been Waiting For
Note: This article was originally posted on theyhavethoughts.com on July 28th, 2018. This one is for you Food Network bingers. The ones who spend their summer days or post-work hours rolling their eyes and screaming at the top of their lungs at the amateur mistakes made on Chopped. The people who single handled created a psuedo-cult following around the Sriracha god himself: Guy Fieri.

Whether you’re a beach bum or an indoor kid, I hope this summer goes amazingly for you. I hope you get that job you wanted, meet your true love, and spend quality time with your friends and family. How amazing would it be if you could be carried around on a bed all day like Cleopatra? Like just have a bunch of oil, handsome, nubile slave boys carry you on their shoulders and feed you cheese and grapes… that would be so superb right now.

Father’s Day has come and gone, and regardless of whether or not you have a father figure in your life… I hope you had a good day. I hope you always have a good day. I, for father’s day, made a giant meal: a roast, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, biscuits, two types of vegetables, and (for the grand finale) a large Miami Beach cake. This meal was made as a surprise, so most of the cooking was done late at night, and I’m very tired.

Do you ever want to be a dryad and turn into a tree? I’d love to be a tree, like a magnolia tree in the deep south. That’s the tree I’d be. I could grow tall and wide and be admired for centuries. Have people read, children play, and couples fall in love underneath me. Feel the warmth of the sun nourish me and sleep deeply in the winter frost. Oh, how I’d love to be a tree.

Today is a beautiful day. It’s a warm dry heat with a gentle breeze that rustles the leaves and smells of hope. It’s a good day to garden, a good day to walk in the park, a good day to sit outside and enjoy nature while reading a lengthy novel. Or you could be inside all day writing articles for websites in order to build up your resume with published materials.

We have another long day of gardening in front of us, and hopefully it keeps the churning seas of anxiety and depression at bay. The job front is looking grim not matter how much I keep applying but I have to remain positive. So I’m going to write this into existence: I will get a job before October 2018. I will move out of my parents’ house before October 2018. I will do well at my job and be able to feed my cats before October 2018. I can do this. I will succeed. And so will you.

Sorry for the hiatus, readers, I’ve had some writer’s block and gardening to attend to. Writer’s block taking more of the form of writer’s fatigue… or overall fatigue… we’re in an anxiety/depression cycle right now, but we’re working our way through. Gardening in that I had some major weeding and bed building to do — like, had-to-call-in-backup-to-come-help major.

Garden Update: The groundhogs have stolen the kale. They can climb under the fences, a breech that was not planned for when the system was built. Affirmative action was taken: I squirted the mother groundhog in the face with the garden hose. The enemy retreated but was later found ten feat in the air, climbing the mulberry tree. We may have one this battle, but we haven’t won the war.

I can’t wait for the day when I can eat a whole cheeseburger with bacon and cheddar covered french fries, a chocolate milkshake, and a red velvet cake. Or just be able to have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I am a woman of simple means, and one of those means is currently filled with the sadness of not being able to eat anything with flour or sugar in it.
