Warning: SPOILERS for Thor: Ragnarok, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.2, or for anyone wishing to go into Infinity War blind.

The first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War is finally here, already racking up a massive 230 million views, and breaking the record for most trailer views in 24 hours. Infinity War is the culmination of a story that has been building for over a decade, beginning with Iron Man in 2008.

Before the film hits theatres in 2018, let's recap where all our favourite Marvel heroes will be when the battle against Thanos begins.

Captain America, Falcon, and The Winter Soldier

The last we saw of Steve Rogers, he was breaking Falcon and The other heroes who fought with him during Civil War out of prison. They then supposedly fled to Wakanda, seeking asylum with King T'Challa, a.k.a Black Panther. Once safe in Wakanda, Steve's best friend Bucky Barnes, also known as The Winter Soldier, had himself returned to suspended animation until his Hydra programming could be broken. We also learn that Steve left a phone with Iron Man to ensure he could still call for his help if needed.

As Infinity War begins, our beloved Cap will still be hiding in Wakanda, along with Falcon. They will likely spend most of the film there, but it will not be long before the pair are called back into action as Thanos' forces attack. As seen in Infinity War's trailer, Bucky has also been woken to join the fight, meaning his programming has been broken, or the situation is truly desperate.

Iron Man

Following the events of Civil War, Tony Stark was left shaken following his battle with Cap, but maintained his support of the Sokovia Accords. He had somewhat recovered from this experience by the end of his next appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming, as he reveals plans to propose to Pepper Potts.

In Infinity War, Tony appears to be heading up the heroes remaining in New York, with Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and a recently returned Bruce Banner by his side. Unfortunately, from what we see in the trailer, the group are no match for Thanos. However, there is hope. Eagle-eyed fans have noticed that at one point in the trailer, while inside the Sanctum Santorum, Tony appears to be clutching the phone that Steve left with him at the end of Civil War.

Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff

Agent Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a Black Widow, was unique during the Civil War conflict as the only character to switch sides in the film. She manages to quickly take down Black Panther, whom falsely believed that Bucky killed his father King T'Chaka, in order to let he and Steve escape. She disappears soon after, with her whereabouts still unknown by the end of the film. A brief video clip of her is seen in Thor: Ragnarok, playing a small but vital role in the film.

When we catch up with Black Widow again, she has dyed her hair blonde from its usual red. This confirms that she has probably been in hiding since we last saw her. She is seen in Wakanda in the Infinity War trailer, but whether she has been there the whole time is not yet known.

Vision and Scarlet Witch

Throughout Civil War, Wanda Maximoff is seen struggling with the potential destructive power of her abilities. While she fights on Captain America's side, her feelings regarding the Sokovia Accords remained conflicted for much of the film. While she is not seen in the final sequence, we can assume that she was rescued from prison along with the rest of Cap's team.

Vision, meanwhile, ended Civil War struggling with his growing humanity. This included his guilt over injuring War Machine while distracted, along with his possible feelings for Wanda.

While Wanda most likely spent some time laying low in Wakanda, from what we see in the trailer, it is unclear whether she is still there when Infinity War begins. Like Black Widow, she has dyed her hair, so wherever she may be, she is in hiding. Wanda is also seen sharing a tender moment with Vision. As Tony does feel bad about landing his friends in prison during Civil War, it is possible that he and Vision are happy to help keep her hidden elsewhere.

Alternatively, there is a possibility that the scene with Wanda and Vision is taking place after Thanos' arrival. Once he learns of Thanos' goal of gathering the Infinity Stones, Tony may call Steve to find out his whereabouts, and send Vision, the keeper of the Mind Stone, to him for protection.

Doctor Strange

After spending a while bargaining with Dormammu in his own movie, we last saw Doctor Steven Strange, now protector of the New York Sanctum, in Thor: Ragnarok. He agreed to aid Thor in finding Odin in the hope that Thor would take his sometimes evil brother, Loki, away from New York as soon as possible.

Currently, he still resides in the New York Sanctum, where he witnesses Bruce Banner fall through his roof. Alongside Bruce, Tony, and Wong, he may also witness Thanos' arrival on Earth. While he is only seen a few times in the trailer, Strange is sure to be an important character in the film due to his possession of the Time Stone, concealed within the Eye Of Agamotto.

The Hulk/Bruce Banner

Absent from the Earth-bound branch of the MCU since the end of Avengers: Age Of Ultron, fans became reacquainted with Bruce Banner and his alter ego, The Incredible Hulk, during the events of Thor: Ragnarok. Hulk ended the film with Thor, Loki, and The Grandmaster's former gladiators on a ship full of Asgardian refugees, bound for Earth.

While Banner reaches Earth, crashing through the roof of the Sanctum Santorum, the other occupants of the ship do not appear to be with him. Reuniting with Tony, it seems that he may be a witness to Thanos' arrival. The Hulk is also seen joining the battle in Wakanda, making him the only character confirmed to appear in both the film's major locations so far.

Thor

The God of Thunder ended his most recent adventure as the newly crowned King Of Asgard, leading his people across space in the hope of finding asylum on Earth. Unfortunately, Ragnarok's mid-credits scene sees their journey interrupted by what has since been confirmed as The Sanctuary II, a ship belonging to Thanos.

The Hulk's plummet to Earth does not bode well for the Asgardian Ship, but Thor does appear to survive whatever disaster befalls them. He is then apparently rescued by The Guardians Of The Galaxy, set to act as the bridge that will bring them into the larger battle.

The Guardians Of The Galaxy

When MCU fans last saw The Guardians, they had defeated Peter Quill's evil Celestial Father, Ego, and gave his adoptive father, Yondu, a hero's funeral. They then presumably continue their travels through space.

It has since been revealed that Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.2 took place just a few months after their first film. This means that by the time we catch up with them in Infinity War, a few more years have passed since we've seen them compared to other characters. They will likely be drawn into the battle through a number of reasons; A likely attack by Thanos on the Nova Corps to obtain the Power Stone, their rescue of Thor, and of course, Gamora's relationship to Thanos, as well as Drax's desire for revenge against him.

Ant-Man And Hawkeye

Both joining Team Cap during Civil War, Scott Lang and Clint Barton, also known as Ant-Man and Hawkeye, are imprisoned after the battle at the airport. They are rescued by Steve in the film's closing moments.

Neither of these characters seem to be present in Infinity War's first trailer. Many are speculating that Ant-Man is either present but too small to see, or will only have a minor role in Infinity War, saving his next big appearance for Ant-Man and the Wasp. Hawkeye's whereabouts are uncertain.

This list is really just the beginning. Fans have many more questions, but most of them probably won't be answered for sure until Avengers: Infinity War is released in May, 2018.
