'Avengers: Infinity War' & 'Avengers 4' Cast: Every Character Who Has Been Confirmed So Far

The crowning glory of the MCU, Avengers: Infinity War promises to take Earth's Mightiest Heroes to the cosmic stage. At one point, the Russo brothers were telling us that the film would feature a whopping 68 named characters (they later claimed that was a joke).

Whatever the number may be, the reality is that fans are expecting Infinity War and the as-yet-untitled Avengers 4 to be the biggest events in Marvel history, with more characters than you can shake a Quinjet at. Who's confirmed, who's uncertain, and who do we know isn't going to make an appearance in the film? Read on to find out.

Adam Warlock — NOT IN THE FILM

Fans have been expecting Adam Warlock to crop up for a long, long time. Unfortunately, this is one character who's definitely not in the film! Kevin Feige himself has officially stated:

“He’s not. He’s not in 'Infinity War'. But he will be a part of the future Marvel cosmic universe and a pretty important part of that.”

While there's a nod to the character in the post-credit scenes of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, James Gunn has noted that he had to fight for this. Marvel feared fans would expect Warlock in Infinity War or Avengers 4, but Gunn reassured them that he'd be upfront that the character won't appear until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. — Very Unlikely

Fans have always been fascinated by the idea of the TV superheroes appearing in Infinity War, but most attention has been on the newer Netflix heroes. Clark Gregg's Agent Coulson is particularly unlikely to appear; Joss Whedon refused to use him in Avengers: Age of Ultron, simply because he felt it would cause confusion for people who only watch the movies. That logic still stands.

We may see cameos of 'enhanced' individuals from Agents Of SHIELD working to drive back Thanos's army across the world — say, Chloe Bennet's Quake or Gabriel Luna's Ghost Rider. The problem, though, is the rate of change for TV show characters exceeds that of blockbuster films. After all, back when she was introduced in 2013 she was a hacker named Skye. Now, she's Agent Daisy Johnson, a powerful Inhuman. A more likely scenario is that we'll get a major tie-in; Season 5 will launch in November this year, meaning the season finale would air around the time Infinity War will be released.

Ant-Man — CONFIRMED!

Captain America: Civil War gave Paul Rudd's Ant-Man (or 'Tic-Tac') a power-up that might just come in handy in Infinity War — a Giant-Man will be a lot more useful than an Ant-Man in the battle against Thanos, after all! Set photos revealed Paul Rudd on the set of Infinity War in Atlanta, so he's confirmed.

Betty Ross — Rumored But Unlikely

Perhaps one of the most unexpected rumors is that Liv Tyler's Betty Ross will return to the MCU in Infinity War. Unfortunately, those reports seem confused, with Tyler in the UK filming a different project. Take this one with a serious pinch of salt.

The Black Order — CONFIRMED!

The Black Order is a fairly recent concept in terms of Thanos's mythology. The Black Order are nefarious group, who essentially serve as Thanos's lieutenants. They've been redesigned for Infinity War, and will actually be the "children" Thanos has taken and brutally raised as his warriors. Marvel finally gave us official confirmation at SDCC2017, with an exciting first look at the designs.

Black Panther — CONFIRMED!

Black Panther is set to be a crucial film on the journey to Infinity War. Back in January 2016, Kevin Feige told Empire Magazine:

"T'Challa's story is very important to us as it links to the next Avengers films, which is why we brought it forward."

It comes as no surprise, then, that Black Panther was mentioned in the official casting call. Chadwick Boseman has also been seen on-set, teasing major scenes set in Wakanda.

Black Widow — CONFIRMED!

We'd pretty much assumed that Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow would appear in the film, so nobody was surprised to see her name on the official casting call. At this year's Academy Awards, she was asked for an update on a possible solo Black Widow movie and gave a telling reply:

"I’m still trying to wrap my head around the Infinity War... and then I’ll let you know afterward."

Set photos have shown Scarlett Johansson joining filming in Scotland.

Captain Marvel — CONFIRMED FOR AVENGERS 4

Although Brie Larson's name appeared on the official casting call for Infinity War, Joe Russo told ComicBook.com that she's a no-go for that film. To everybody's delight though, it looks as though Larson's Captain Marvel will indeed appear in Avengers 4 as she was recently spotted on set in Atlanta.

Cindy Moon — Rumored

IMDb is reporting that Peter Parker's classmate Cindy Moon, played by Tiffany Espensen, is set to appear in Infinity War. It may just be that she's on Peter's school-bus when he senses an impending alien invasion. That said, fans are eagerly hoping we'll be given a subtle hint that Cindy has super-powers of her own. In the comics, Moon was bitten by the same spider that gave Peter his abilities. She's now best known as the superhero Silk, and fans are eager to see her character enter the MCU.

The Collector — CONFIRMED!

Benicio del Toro's Collector, current owner of an Infinity Stone, was spotted around Atlanta back when Infinity War was filming. So it came as no surprise when leaked clips from the trailer revealed that the character will appear in the film. The D23 Expo 2017 gave fans a glimpse of Gamora weeping in the ruins of the Collector's lair, so it's likely that he won't survive Thanos's wrath. That said, it's worth noting that this Elder of the Universe may be a lot more important than you'd think at first glance...

The Defenders — Very Unlikely

Fans are eager for the Marvel Netflix superheroes, The Defenders, to appear in Infinity War. In all honesty, that currently seems unlikely. The likelihood was recently even further diminished after Anthony Mackie, a.k.a. Falcon, expressed his view that "it wouldn't work at all".

Doctor Strange — CONFIRMED!

Even as we eagerly awaited Doctor Strange, Benedict Cumberbatch was openly discussing the “logistical challenge" of his schedule. It's ultimately led Marvel to commission a body double for some basic scenes.

Falcon — CONFIRMED!

We'd already suspected that Anthony Mackie's Falcon was in the film — the Russo Brothers seem very fond of the character, and Mackie himself has consistently seemed far too 'clued up' on the film. That was finally confirmed in Marvel's teaser video released from Atlanta!

Guardians of the Galaxy — CONFIRMED!

The Guardians Of The Galaxy always seemed like a sure bet, with the Russos calling Infinity War "a culmination of everything that's happened before in the MCU". The official casting call left us pretty confident that the Guardians would indeed appear, and eventually Zoe Saldana confirmed that her character — Gamora — will have a major role:

"The good thing that keeps me relaxed is that these directors are good. They have a really good pedigree. Their last movie, I liked it. I liked their choices. And everyone that worked with them had a really great experience. And James Gunn is a producer on it, so I know that he won't ever let the integrity of what he's created for the Guardians ever be compromised. So I'm at ease. Plus I love the Marvel producers. They're all great, they all want us to win."

Excitingly, Marvel's teaser video for Infinity War also featured Rocket fighting alongside Thor! Fans became concerned over some of the newer Guardians, particularly Pom Klementieff's Mantis — their names weren't mentioned in the casting call. Thankfully, Klementieff herself revealed that she was headed to Atlanta, and even recently indicated she was joining more shoots, along with Karen Gillan's Nebula.

Happy Hogan — CONFIRMED

Jon Favreau's Happy Hogan returned to the MCU in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and it seems he's also playing a (likely minor) role in Infinity War too. Robert Downey Jr. tweeted an image of Favreau on-set in Atlanta.

Hawkeye — CONFIRMED!

While discussing the 'Mission Impossible' franchise, Jeremy Renner revealed that most of 2017 is going to be taken up filming Infinity War. This means Hawkeye is a certainty. Nobody will be especially surprised to hear that — Marvel like playing the long game, and they clearly brought him out of retirement in Captain America: Civil War for a reason. He's since been confirmed for Avengers 4, too.

Hela — Possible

In the comics, Thanos literally courts Death — he's besotted with the cosmic avatar of Death, and his whole motive is to please her! Some fans are increasingly convinced that Hela will become the MCU's incarnation of Death, an easier-to-digest concept for non-comic-book fans. Only time (and Thor: Ragnarok) will tell.

Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner — and his more famous alter-ego the Hulk — is due to appear in Thor: Ragnarok. When Yahoo questioned Ruffalo about another possible Hulk solo outing, he said it was a no-go. To everyone's surprise, he added:

"We’ve worked a really interesting arc into Thor 3, Avengers 3 and 4 for Banner that I think will – when it’s all added up – will feel like a Hulk movie, a standalone movie."

Infinity War has changed shape since that interview, but it's clear that Ruffalo considered Thor: Ragnarok to be setup for his role in Infinity War. I doubt that anything's changed.

Whatever the case may be, though, he's definitely confirmed; Ruffalo was seen on-set in both Edinburgh and New York.

Iron Man — CONFIRMED!

It was always safe to assume Tony Stark was guaranteed to appear in Infinity War. He's been front-and-center of the MCU since its inauguration. Iron Man is likely to be one of the central characters (Downey does command the big bucks, after all), and will have a number of intriguing character arcs. Stark's experience during the Chitauri invasion of New York left him emotionally and psychologically scarred (see Iron Man 3), and led to his foolish creation of Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron. In Infinity War, Stark's worst fears will be realized; Thanos will come to Earth.

Thanos's arrival will force Iron Man to rebuild his relationship with Steve Rogers, as the two came to blows at the end of Captain America: Civil War. A teaser from Benedict Cumberbatch has also suggested that Iron Man will cross paths with Doctor Strange, which could lead to some fun character beats.

Fans are deeply concerned that Avengers 4 will ultimately end with the Avenger's death, pointing to a mysterious funeral scene. Whether that's the case or not, Downey's own Instagram has teased that he's still around when that film kicks off.

Loki featured prominently in Joss Whedon's original plans for Infinity War, but the film changed shape a lot after Whedon left. As recently as March this year, Tom Hiddleston surprised fans by not being sure whether or not he was in the film at all:

"I don’t know! Honestly, I don’t know. They haven’t got their ducks in a row yet. They make it up as they go along.”

Four months later, though, our fears were laid to rest. The D23 Expo 2017 included footage from Infinity War, and gave fans a brief glimpse of Loki presenting Thanos with the Tesseract. He's definitely confirmed for the film.

Man-Ape — Possible

Part of Infinity War seems to be set in Wakanda, so it's no surprise we're learning more of the supporting cast from Black Panther will appear in the film. In the case of M'Baku, played by Winston Duke, there are intriguing rumors that he'll be cropping up. A major update to IMDB identified Duke as having joined the film. While that would normally be treated as highly suspect, IMDB chose to advertize it on social media as breaking news. That's an unusual approach for the site, and suggests they're pretty confident of this update.

Maria Hill — Possible

Fans of Cobie Smulders's Maria Hill point to an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, which seems to imply that she's in Infinity War. It's only an implication, though, so we shouldn't read too much into it at this stage.

Ned Leeds — Possible

Jacob Batalon's Ned Leeds was introduced in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and has been seen Snapchatting photos of Tom Holland in Atlanta during filming of Infinity War. Interviewed by Polygon, Batalon refused to confirm whether or not he's in the film.

Nick Fury — Very Unlikely

There were reports that Samuel L. Jackson was on set for filming in the UK, but we never saw him appear in any set photos, so we have to take those with a pinch of salt. More recently, Jackson grumbled to Yahoo Movies:

"I wasn’t in the ‘superhero argument’ movie ['Captain America: Civil War'], I’m not in 'Avengers 3 and 4'. They’re shooting them now, and they haven’t called me yet."

It's worth noting that Avengers 4 has only recently begun filming, so Jackson could still get the call to reprise the role of Nick Fury in a cameo of some kind.

Another of the Black Panther's ferocious guards, Deadline has confirmed that Danai Gurira is returning in Infinity War.

Pepper Potts — CONFIRMED

Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts returned to the MCU in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and — in a wonderful, unexpected twist — she and Tony are now engaged. Fans were sure that means Marvel has a long-term plan for Pepper, and now that's been confirmed. Not only has Robert Downey Jr. tweeted that Paltrow is on-set for Infinity War, set photos have shown her in Atlanta. She's also notably wearing an engagement ring (but not yet a wedding ring).

Quicksilver — Very Unlikely

Aaron Taylor-Johnson was originally signed up for a multi-picture deal playing the part of Quicksilver, but the character was killed off in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Some fans remain convinced that he'll be resurrected using the Infinity Gems in Infinity War; personally, I'm afraid that I doubt it. It's likely that Marvel and Fox reached an agreement, with Marvel focusing on the Scarlet Witch and Fox focusing on Quicksilver.

Some fans remain confident Quicksilver will return, but personally, I'm not going to hold my breath.

Sally Avril — CONFIRMED!

Isabella Amara played a background character named Sally in Spider-Man: Homecoming, one of Peter Parker's classmates and a fellow member of the Academic Decathlon team. She's confirmed to BlackFilm.com that she'll be reprising the role in Infinity War, suggesting we'll see other members of Homecoming's supporting cast too.

In the comics, Sally Avril became the gymnastic Bluebird in an attempt to uncover Spider-Man's secret identity. I doubt we'll be seeing her don spandex just yet, though...

Scarlet Witch — CONFIRMED!

Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch was actually one of the first characters confirmed for Infinity War. In press screenings for Captain America: Civil War, Joe Russo explained:

"She is on a growth arc, and it is part of her development. It is very tricky with powerful characters, because unless they have an internal struggle or a flaw that limits them then they do become limitless, and the storytelling becomes muddled and not very interesting. You know she could've stopped that fight at the airport in 5 seconds if she were at the peak of her powers, so it really has to do her character specifically going on a journey to understand what the limits of her powers are. She makes a mistake very early in the movie that sets her back, and we'll get to see where she goes in Infinity War."

Comments from Benedict Cumberbatch have suggested that Infinity War will introduce Scarlet Witch to Doctor Strange, and set photos from Scotland have suggested the two spend some time together. It's possible that the MCU's 'science' background for Scarlet Witch will be retconned; in the comics, Scarlet Witch is a powerful sorceress and has actually trained under Doctor Strange.

Sharon Carter — Unlikely

Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter may have shared a passionate lip-lock with Captain America in Civil War, but the character seems unlikely to return in Infinity War. Asked during the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, VanCamp said she still had "no idea" whether or not she's appear in the film. Given Infinity War was wrapping up production at the time, with Marvel moving on to Avengers 4, that strongly suggests the character isn't going to appear in the third Avengers film.

Shuri — Possible

Another member of the supporting cast for Black Panther, there are intriguing hints that Letitia Wright’s Shuri may well be set to appear. The eagle-eyed MCUExchange spotted an intriguing hint over on IMDB; her stunt double, Crystal Michelle, is slated to crop up. Take this one with a pinch of salt for now.

According to Tom Holland, Marvel had to renegotiate a little to get Spider-Man into the film — but the outcome was never really in doubt! Speaking to an Italian magazine after Christmas, Holland happily told us he'll appear in "three films over the next four years, including Avengers: Infinity War". No surprise, the teaser video for Infinity War soon confirmed that he's on-set.

Steve Rogers — CONFIRMED!

Although Chris Evans's Steve Rogers gave up the identity of Captain America at the tail-end of Captain America: Civil War, he left Tony Stark with a phone to call him in should the world ever need his help again. This was an obvious part of the build-up to Infinity War, but the Russo brothers have warned we shouldn't expect Tony Stark and Chris Evans to simply be magically reconciled; their next meeting will be awkward and uncomfortable, forcing both characters to face the consequences of their actions in Civil War. Most fans are expecting Steve to have become Captain America once again by the end of the film.

He's recently been seen on set for Avengers 4, too, so it looks as though Rogers survives Infinity War.

Thor — CONFIRMED!

Chris Hemsworth's Thor has always been a certainty for Infinity War, and Hemsworth has even been seen on-set in Edinburgh. What's more, we know he'll share scenes with Benedict Cumberbatch, as there were difficulties aligning their schedules. Intriguingly, we've seen images of the Odinson in Marvel's teaser video for the film — and he doesn't appear to be wielding Mjolnir...

Valkyrie — CONFIRMED!

Spotted on set at Durham Cathedral, Tessa Thompson will reprise the role of Valkyrie!

Vision — CONFIRMED!

Infinity War simply won't work without Paul Bettany's Vision — after all, he has an Infinity Gem planted in his forehead! We know from Captain America: Civil War that Vision is curious about the mysteries of the Mind Stone, and seeks to master it. A teaser from Benedict Cumberbatch suggests this quest will ultimately lead him to Doctor Strange's side. Whatever the case may be, set photos from Scotland have captured Paul Bettany playing the character. It seems at one point he tries to hide his identity...

War Machine — CONFIRMED!

War Machine may have been badly injured in Captain America: Civil War, but he's still set to return in Infinity War. In the aftermath of the D23 Expo 2017, Don Cheadle chatted to Good Morning America, revealing that his character becomes increasingly cybernetic. The arc sounds to dovetail with a similar twist in the comics, where War Machine's injuries led to his becoming a cyborg who could interface with sophisticated technology.

Wasp — NOT IN THE FILM

At New York Comic Con 2016, Evangeline Lilly — who's soon to don the Wasp costume — told Blastr that she isn't in Infinity War. With Ant-Man and the Wasp not released until after Infinity War, Marvel decided that they wanted to give her the deeper origin story before adding her to any team-up film. Apparently she will be in the as-yet-untitled Avengers 4, though.

Winter Soldier — CONFIRMED!

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Sebastian Stan's Winter Soldier will appear in Infinity War, suggesting a very powerful and emotional arc should he cross paths with Tony Stark. Given the Russo brothers are clearly fond of the character, and have consistently said there's a "through-line" from Captain America: Civil War to Infinity War, that's no real surprise.

In a more recent discussion with Collider, Stan also confirmed he'll be cropping up in Avengers 4.

Wong — CONFIRMED!

Yes, you read that right — Benedict Wong has confirmed that he'll be returning in Infinity War! Interviewed by ComicBook.com, he commented:

"I'm thrilled I'm going to be in Infinity War. I'm looking forward to, I'll tell you that one first."

In the comics, Wong is traditionally portrayed as Doctor Strange's manservant. He's got a much more active role in the MCU, though, as an active member of the Masters of the Mystic Arts! Set photos have showed Wong battling alongside Doctor Strange and Tony Stark in the streets of New York.
