When word of filming for Avengers: Infinity War got out, fans were waiting for the first batch of paparazzi photos to be released but unfortunately, a close cover has been held over filming sites and no images have been leaked so far. Fortunately for us, Marvel Studios has released a featurette, providing a sneak peek at production on Avengers: Infinity War.

The featurette for Avengers: Infinity War is narrated by Kevin Feige for the most part, along with the writers, Joe and Anthony Russo, Steven McFeely and Christopher Markus participating as well.

Concept Art For Avengers: Infinity War Features Thor With New Weapon

Most of the featurette describes how the Avengers are going to transition from earthly conflicts like Captain America: Civil War to the massive cosmic battle on its way in the Avengers: Infinity War. Towards the end of the featurette, Kevin Feige expresses his enthusiasm for the Guardians of the Galaxy to be joining the Avengers in their fight against Thanos. What's of more importance here isn't what Feige says, it's the following screenshot of concept art for Avengers: Infinity War depicting Rocket Racoon fighting alongside Thor.

Within the concept art, Rocket Racoon can be seen shooting what appears to be some type of space gun. Standing next to Rocket is Thor, with a partially visible weapon. Thor isn't wielding his signature hammer, Mjonir which brings up an intriguing question, what happened to Thor's hammer?

Official Synopsis for Thor: Ragnarok Reveals Thor is Already Without His Hammer In Ragnarok

It's possible Thor is still without his hammer after the events of Thor: Ragnarok. Despite Thor: Ragnarok still being months away from its premiere, the official synopsis released indicates Thor will be on a cosmic adventure without his hammer. Here's the synopsis for Thor: Ragnarok.

In Marvel Studios' Thor: Ragnarok, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok – the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization – at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger – the Incredible Hulk!

Considering how the synopsis reveals Thor is without his hammer in Ragnarok, then paired with the concept art for Avengers: Infinity War depicting Thor with a new Asgardian weapon, there's a good chance Thor's hammer is gone for good. On the plus side, Thor's new weapon holds some massive implications if it does originate from Asgard.

Looking at the design of the staff-like weapon, the handle shares a striking resemblance to the leather strapping on Thor's hammer which means it's probably Asgardian. The metal also seems to hold a sleek design, similar to the staff wielded by Odin. However, Thor may come across this staff in his travels during Thor: Ragnarok.

Where Will Thor Receive His New Weapon From?

In Thor: Ragnarok, Thor will find himself imprisoned on Sakarr, a planet where space-faring adventurers wind up trapped then forced into gladiatorial combat. With that in mind, Thor may run into someone on Sakarr who is able to craft an Asgardian weapon for him. If so, the staff seen wielded by Thor in the concept art for Avengers: Infinity War might be something crafted specifically for Thor during the events of Ragnarok. Although, it's much more probable that Thor will request an Asgardian to craft him a new weapon when he returns from Sakarr.

We should also consider the possibility of Thor's new weapon being inspired by an Asgardian item from Marvel comics, the likeliest being Jarnbjorn.

In the comics, Jarnbjorn is an axe used by Thor before he was deemed worthy to wield the hammer, Mjonir. Thor used the Jarnbjorn on multiple occasions before taking the hammer into his possession. The battle axe was supposedly recovered by Baron Mordo after Thor lost it in battle.

In terms of how Jarnbjorn can play into Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War, it's possible that Thor losing his hammer in Ragnarok will be cause for him to recover his old weapon, Jarnbjorn. Thor has only wielded a hammer in the MCU so if he were to wield another weapon like Jarnbjorn, the axe would probably be introduced as a new weapon rather than one of Thor's old weapons. However, it's possible Thor has his axe, Jarnbjorn stored away in Asgard and we just don't know about it. If so, Thor could decide to pull out his old weapon as a substitute for his hammer.

Regardless, this concept art of Thor wielding a new weapon is very intriguing. Thor's hammer has been a consistent set piece in all the MCU films that Thor has been present for so seeing him with a new weapon must mean a grim fate for his previous hammer, Mjonir

Avengers: Infinity War premieres in theaters on May 4, 2018.
