'Baby Driver' Gave Me a Small Makeover

Before the film came out, I felt a change of pace in me.

Edgar Wright is slowly but surely becoming one of my favorite directors, and this movie was like getting to the peak of the mountain but remembering how far a journey it's been and that there're more places to go, or it was like being at a hotel that's just a lot of fun and you don't want to leave it.

So when the movie was premiering in film festivals and the people I pay attention to in the film community that go to the festivals were buzzing about it, I was beyond ready and excited to see it, but I had to wait until the summer since it was already a long wait because I found out about it in December or January and the movie wasn't going to be released until June.

While I was visiting my older brother during the holidays, he saw a short commercial for the movie and was impressed. After the commercial was over, he noticed what I was doing, which was watching YouTube videos with my earphones on, but he knew that I longboard and listened to music while I do it. An idea hit his head after he put everything together, and he told me that my nickname should be “Baby,” and, since I don't drive, that's when my whole nickname was born, which is “Baby Longboarder.”

After my brother came up with my nickname, I didn't start living by it until the summer finally came because when it gets warmer. I tend to ride my longboard more. I got to see if my nickname would truly stick by the time summer came around; it was finally time to give it a shot.

After I saw the movie, I was enthralled with music and there were times I would try to see if life can really follow my music like if a light change or an automatic door can follow with the beat of my music. I would go to work listening to “Bellbottoms,” but I would start off walking while carrying my longboard first, but as soon as the drums would speed up, I would hop on to go faster, but when I got off to go home, I would listen to Logic's “Till the End” to reflect how I'd feel because I'd be excited to go home but I'd be exhausted because of work. Luckily, I caught a little break from work since I went to a camp for a few days.

So I went to a summer camp for adults only and introduced myself as my name but I added my nickname as a courtesy. Like I'd tell people, “My name's Don but I go by Baby as well,” and the surprising part was that some people were actually calling me by my nickname, one gal would even call me “Baby Boo.” Ever since camp, I've been sticking with the nickname.

I still go by “Baby,” but it's hard to pass it off to people when other people will either think I'm gay, trying to flirt with a gal who's in a relationship, or flirt with a gal who's married, so I left it on the backburner for a while, but since I moved, I have a bit of a better shot at passing it off since the only person I know in town is my older brother, so, in a way, I'm able to start over.
