The tangled web of the Spider-Man universe is set to get a little more complicated next year as Sony's Venom comes to cinemas. Promising to be a sans-Spider-Man adventure, and with no one quite sure where it fits into the MCU, the story of the alien symbiote is shrouded in mystery. So far, all we know is that #TomHardy will be rolling in the sticky black stuff to play the leading Eddie Brock, but could the film's working title give us a hint at where the storyline is heading?

You're poison running through my veins.

Launching Sony's villainverse, and away from the cotton candy world of #TomHolland's #SpiderMan, expect #Venom and the likes of Silver and Black to be more R-rated affairs. The plot may be covered in a web of secrecy, but Omega Underground has revealed that Venom's working title has the name "Antidote. So, with this in mind, let's dig a little deeper into the dark on what the title could mean.

Obviously, working titles aren't the be all and end all — we only recently saw Jurassic World 2 move from "Ancient Futures" to "Fallen Kingdom." However, "Antidote" sounds like a pretty plausible suffix to the main title for Venom. Brock's origins are mired in tragedy, and after being fired from his job, he had a chance encounter with the alien symbiote our heroic Spider-Man was trying to rid himself of. With the aforementioned lack of Spidey in Venom, it would make sense that the movie picks up long after this event or gets rid of it altogether. It is here that the "Antidote" moniker could give us a hint.

"Antidote" could fix the Peter Parker problem by giving us a wholly new origin for the character. With medical connotations, "Antidote" could allude to some sort of outbreak or viral infection as Brock's pairing with alien. Otherwise, "Antidote" could be Brock's search for a cure and a race against time to regain his sense of humanity before the symbiote completely takes hold.

There is of course one final option, and a possibility that we could see the "Ultimate" version of Venom. Here, Venom was created in a lab as a cure for cancer, but eventually weaponized itself into the killing machine we have come to love. Although it may not technically be full canon anymore, an Easter Egg from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 already heavily hinted at Oscorp manufacturing their own symbiote. With the franchise being scrapped after the second entry, we will never know what plans director Marc Webb had for his version of Venom, but some of the story may have made it over to Sony's soft reboot.

A whole host venomous villains.

Elsewhere, we already know that Cletus Kasady's Carnage will play a part in the film, as will Eddie's ex- wife, Anne Weying. Carnage is a fan-favorite that everyone can't wait to see, but the inclusion of Weying also teases the arrival of the equally deranged She-Venom. Could Hardy start the film in full Venom mode, then slowly morph into the antihero of the piece to take on Carnage? "Antidote" certainly suggests that he wants to rid himself of the intergalactic beast rather than embrace its powerful dark side.

Zombieland’s Ruben Fleischer is directing the film and shooting is expected to start on September 1. With only Hardy cast so far, expect the likes of San Diego Comic-Con to offer a window into the soul of Venom and start the hype machine early. As one of Spider-Man's most notorious rogues, here's hoping that Sony can give us the villain film we deserve instead of the cobbled together Sinister Six they tried to introduce in the Amazing Spider-Man films. Either way, Venom is poised to poison the superhero world with a much-needed dose of darkness.
