"Holy R-rating Batman", Batfans and Supernuts get ready for some big news! Ahead of the release of Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, it has been revealed that the upcoming clash of giants has squeezed an R-rating from director Zack Snyder.

But don't get your capes in a flap just yet, we will have to wait a little bit longer before we see what R-rated action is hid beneath the utility belts. The theatrical release of BvS will still be PG-13, only the extended DVD/Blu-ray version will see an R.

Our guess is we will get to see some extended pummelling time between the two heroes and a larger look at secondary antagonist Doomsday. The news comes of the back of R-rated Deadpool, which secured the highest ever opening for an R-rated film in the US and an opening weekend of $132 million. Could this have been what sparked Snyder and Warner Bros. to create the special edition?

The motion Picture Association (via Stitch Kingdom) recently revealed the news of the reclassified film on their website.

Whatever it is, it can only be good. It was a surprise that DC's upcoming ensemble piece Suicide Squad wasn't pushing for an R. In a film with mutant crocodiles, crazed assassins, and Jared Leto as The Joker, it would kind of made sense. But to have BvS join the R-ranks is a pleasant surprise. R-rated films seems to be making a nostalgic comeback and we couldn't be happier. The Merc with a Mouth has set critics alight and managed to shun the shadowy figure of Reynolds' previous Deadpool performance from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Not bad for a man whose other superhero credits include Green Lantern.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits UK and US cinemas on March 25. Starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot and Jesse Eisenberg, the film is 2 hours and 31 minutes of super-mayhem that threatens to topple Deadpool. The much anticipated Avengers counterpart, Justice League Pt.1 begins shooting on April 11, reuniting the above cast. Will it also go for a similar R-edition? Whilst we will have to wait until later this year to see what the BvS extended cut holds, chances are we are in for a bloody ride in the Batmobile.
