Best Places to Hide During a Zombie Apocalypse

In the event of a zombie apocalypse, it's vitally important that you have a safe place to hide out in.

With pop culture’s incessant interest in zombies, the undead hype has exploded into living rooms across the world with TV shows and movies like the Walking Dead, Fear of the Walking Dead and the always classic Night of the Living Dead. These TV shows and movies are becoming more and more realistic, almost too real. Zombies have dominated science fiction for years. But we know they don't actually exist, right? Wrong. There are several real-life diseases that could make you act like a zombie. Some diseases like Sleeping sickness, Rabies and Necrosis show signs that are eerily close to what you’d expect a zombie to be like. Living in our world right now almost feels like everything is upside down. I mean come on, Donald Trump is an actual candidate for presidency so it would be no surprise if the next worldwide outbreak was a bunch of zombies. Anything is possible at this point. Last time I checked the zombies weren’t walking the streets but if they do, here are the best places you should hide during a zombie apocalypse. Every location on this list of zombie hideouts have their pros and cons but be reassured they would be your best bet.

An Island

This is your obvious choice to hideout at, but only if you can get yourself a reliable boat, especially one that will help you escape to your island getaway. You must also be able to bring equipment, supplies, lots of water and food to last you while you wait out the zombie apocalypse. There are still plenty of islands not yet touched by the hand of man, so you have many to choose from, that is, if you can get there.

Jail or Prison

Being in a jail might have not completely turned out like the characters in the Walking Dead thought, but they did last a long time there. When you think of being in a jail most shiver at the thought of being locked away against their will. But a jail would only be an ideal place to hide during a zombie apocalypse, as long as you had the keys. Staying in a jail or prison would for sure prevent anything especially like the zombies you’re running away from. If you are lucky enough to stumble upon a minimal security complex like those fancy one’s in Norway, you’ll be staying in the lap of luxury. You’ll feel like you’re some 4 star hotel compared to being out in the element with those killer zombies. Hopefully the jail has fencing and bars, if not, it would be no help keeping out the undead.

A Castle

If history can teach us anything, castles have always been a wise choice when trying to keep your enemies at bay. Castles served their purpose to let people protect themselves from the hordes of enemies thirsting for you and your people's’ blood. These structures would hold up even if the threat is now the undead kind. Some castles are like big fortified farms. The land enclosed by the castle could be used for planting some food and raising livestock, if you can get your hands on some. You could be completely self sustainable inside your little kingdom. Double points if the castle you acquire comes with a moat!

A Boat or Yacht

A boat would be the best place to stay while you scope out your newest home. But if you just want to stay away from land completely, hopefully you can score a luxury yacht. Living on a yacht would be the safest and most comfortable bet. You will be out of reach from all the flesh eaters on the ground, but don’t be surprised if you get a couple of floaters occasionally. At times you would have to make it to dry land in order to collect more fuel, food and water. If you’re especially lucky to find a ship, hopefully it’s one with equipment that converts salt water to drinkable water. But be aware, if you find infected passengers, make them walk the plank, fast!

Lighthouse

If you can get your hands on a lighthouse you’re in luck because zombies, according to TV and the movies, can’t walk up stairs all that well. Getting up those steep and winding stairs would be a challenge for the undead. A lighthouse is also a safe place to hide out during a zombie apocalypse because it’s mostly surrounded by water and its height gives you a better vantage point with a 360 degree panoramic view.

A Bank Vault

Being locked in a bank vault has it’s advantages just like hiding out in a jail or prison. The only disadvantage would be if the vault doesn’t have a way to look outside the door or lock from the inside. If the vault didn't have these essential things, it’s not generally recommended. Most banks are centered in populated areas so finding one wouldn’t be that hard. From time to time you would have to fight your way out of the bank in search for food, water and supplies, so there’s that. This is only a suggestion if you're at a loss for finding proper shelter. This would only be in a pinch and only temporary.

An Underground Bomb Shelter

One of the safest places to be during a zombie apocalypse is in an underground bunker or bomb shelter. Assuming you could find a bunker that is properly ventilated to breathe, and have enough time to gather up supplies like food, water, and fuel to generate electricity, waiting out a zombie apocalypse in an underground bunker would be one of the safest and most sensible strategies. The only con would be again the fight to leave for more supplies. Like it or not, you’re going to have to confront a zombie or two now and again.

Deep Sea Oil Drilling Platforms

Propped up on stilts high above the waterline, sea oil drilling platforms would be another great find if you could get yourself there. These structures could provide an almost perfect strategic refuge in the event of a zombie outbreak. The platforms could easily be fortified to provide the best protection and seclusion you could find. Like a lighthouse these platforms are surrounded by water which give you the best view. Also it's arguably the best zombie deterrent. Access to these raised structures is highly unlikely by the walking dead.

Treehouse

Just like the lighthouse and a deep sea oil rig, a treehouse provides you isolation and the advantage to see the zombies or anyone actually alive that is trying to get at you. Same principals apply: you need supplies, water and food to survive. If you don’t take enough with you, expect to climb down that tree often. Be warned there are some downsides to living in a treehouse, you will most definitely be subject to snakes, spiders, to name a few. Also there is that small, but kind of ironic, risk of being eaten alive by cannibals.

Mountain

A high mountain, most times, are uninhabited and that would mean you’re probability to survive the zombie apocalypse would be greater. Due to the geographic distance from most cities, a mountain can allow you bite your time in hopes others will contain the outbreak by killing off some zombies or slowing down the rate of infection. Of course, if any of the zombie movies or TV shows have taught us anything, not all zombies are created equally. It is also contingent on how freakishly fast they are, or how well they can climb, you may need to seek out another shelter. Also who wants to climb up that mountain with all that gear, water and food. It would take days just to get up there.

In case of zombie apocalypse I've already picked out the perfect campground, surrounded by tall fences & it's gated, river goes right through it, tons of lakes nearby & lots of wildlife.
