Black Flash Will Join Legends Of Tomorrow Before The Flash

When Season 2 of The Flash concluded, the question on everyone's mind was: When will Hunter Zolomon return as Black Flash? During the Season 2 finale, Hunter Zolomon was apparently dragged away by the Time-wraiths right before being drained of his life-forced and turned into Black Flash.

Black Flash Joining 'Legends Of Tomorrow'

The prospect of Hunter Zolomon turning into Black Flash was just recently confirmed by The Flash EP, Marc Guggenheim:

"We’re going to be seeing the Black Flash on 'Legends.'”

Up until the reveal, Zolomon's future as Black Flash was up in the air, but now that we know Black Flash is on his way to Legends Of Tomorrow, it's only a matter of time before Black Flash returns to seek revenge on Barry Allen. If you recall back in the Season 2 finale of The Flash, Barry Allen went toe-to-toe with Hunter Zolomon a.k.a. Zoom over the fate of Earth-1 and Earth-2.

Barry resorted to using a time remnant of himself to outsmart Zoom, but Zoom wasn't defeated right there and then.

Marc Guggenheim Expands On Black Flash And More Speedsters

After Barry Allen apparently outsmarted Zoom, it looked like Zoom was going to recover but then the Time-Wraiths arrived and carried off Hunter Zolomon, the newly deemed Black Flash.

Black Flash hasn't been seen since his brief appearance in the Season 2 finale of The Flash, but he's going to return very soon, according to The Flash EP, Marc Guggenheim:

“Lily Stein, who was introduced in 'Flash 308,' makes an appearance next week. So there’s a fair amount of Flash-ness going on in 'Legends.' I wish I could say that we were so smart to take advantage of the new timeslot and do that, but we weren’t that smart. We just had already sort of been doing that organically anyway when we found out about the new timeslot. I will say this: There’s a love scene in Episode 11 and we were in the editing room on it — it’s a love scene, it gets a little steamy — and I was joking, ‘Let’s take that 9 p.m. timeslot out for a spin.'”

The statement issued by Guggenheim was brief but enough information to confirm the arrival of Black Flash to the Flash/Arrowverse in the near future.

Why Is Black Flash on 'Legends' Instead Of 'The Flash'?

When Hunter Zolomon became Black Flash, he didn't just get a change in appearance, Zolomon was changed inside and out. The man behind the mask is no longer a man. Zolomon is now an agent working for the Time-wraiths and essentially the Speed-Force, which means the presence of Black Flash on Legends Of Tomorrow probably has to do with a speedster manipulating time, namely Eobard Thawne.

Since it is the duty of the Time-wraiths to prevent any speedsters from altering the timeline, they can't allow Eobard Thawne to create aberrations. One will eventually create a parallel timeline (like Flashpoint) so Thawne and his Legion of Doom changing the timeline on Legends Of Tomorrow won't be allowed.

Is Thawne's Manipulation Of Time the Reason For Black Flash Showing Up On 'Legends'?

If you're caught up with the current episodes of Legends Of Tomorrow then you know Thawne has been a recurring villain during Season 2. Thawne has changed the timeline several times, creating aberrations that are going to gain the attention of the Time-wraiths at some point. When the Time-wraiths do notice what Thawne has been up to, they're going to send Black Flash out to eliminate the problem.

In addition to preventing speedsters from altering the timelime, the Time-wraiths are essentially one and the same with the Speed Force. The Speed Force ensures the timeline progresses on its destined course by granting speedster abilities to individuals like Barry Allen and Jay Garrick of Earth-3. That being said, the Speed Force and the Time-wraiths probably aren't going to look kindly at Eobard Thawne changing the timeline. If so, sending Black Flash to stop Eobard Thawne could be exactly what's about to happen.

It would be interesting to see what kind of interactions Black Flash will have with Eobard Thawne because there's a slight possibility Hunter Zolomon's consciousness will be rattling around in Black Flash's head, enough that Zolomon is able to manipulate his other half (Black Flash) into working with him.

Are Eobard Thawne and Black Flash About to Stage a Race to the Death?

There's no evidence of Black Flash and Eobard Thawne teaming up at any point, but both Zolomon and Thawne are clever characters so either one of them could be capable of concocting a devious plan. Although, the most plausible explanation for why Black Flash is making his appearance on Legends Of Tomorrow instead of The Flash is that he's hunting Eobard Thawne.

We also don't know what kind of abilities were bestowed upon Zolomon when he became Black Flash, but it's safe to assume he's more than just a fast speedster now. Keeping Black Flash's abilities in mind, if Black Flash possesses the abilities of Hunter Zolomon and more, then he's almost certainly faster than Eobard Thawne, which means catching him would be an easy task. That explanation would also give credit to the idea of Black Flash hunting Thawne, since he is a speedster capable of outrunning the incredibly fast Eobard Thawne.

Teddy Sears Might Not Return—Who Will Portray Black Flash?

The actor who played Hunter Zolomon, Teddy Sears, hasn't been contacted to return for the role of Black Flash, so it might go to a different actor. Black Flash's face is also heavily covered by CG effects, so any actor can be implanted into the role in the scenario of Black Flash taking on a more human appearance. However, the logical thing to do would be for Teddy Sears to return.

For now, let's just be attentive to Black Flash's first appearance on Legends Of Tomorrow because there's almost a guarantee that some of Black Flash's dialogue will provide insight on how/when Black Flash will show up on The Flash.
