It looks like it's back to school in the next episode of HBO's Game of Thrones, and a diligent Samwell Tarly is vying for the "Nerd of the Year" award by putting in some serious hours at the Citadel. We have all heard the theory that it will be our tubby Tarly who will be the author of the Game of Thrones, and the studious steward is well on the way to solving every problem in the Seven Kingdoms himself.

Until Samwell, never had someone been as enthralled with reading books since Arthur the Aardvark sang that song about a library card. Apart from working 9–5 realness and pitching his own Greyscale's Anatomy spin-off show, Sam has been busy burying his head in the books of the restricted section at the Citadel. While Jim Broadbent's Maester Marwyn may not be overly impressed with the defiant Tarly, is Sam on the cusp of a major discovery?

A Bastard No More

If the promo images for Season 7's "Eastwatch" are anything to go by, Sam could be about to become even more of an unlikely hero and discover the complicated lineage between Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen. Joined by his beau Gilly, Sam is seen scrolling the scriptures once more. If we have learned anything from Season 7, it is that Sam+book=big announcement. So, if Ned Stark can find out about those Baratheon bastards on his own, surely Sam can discovered some ancient record that Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark were secretly married and had a child.

The show itself is yet to officially spell out R+L=J in an episode, but HBO has confirmed the theory, meaning Jon's real father is the deceased Rhaegar Targaryen. Season 6's "Tower of Joy" scene filled our hearts with emotion, but with only a time-f*cking Bran Stark witnessing events unfold, the rest of humanity, White Walkers, and dragons still doesn't have a clue. With Bran going all emo at the moment, it could be left to Sam to break the news that Jon has some very famous and fiery blood pumping through his veins.

Importantly, the Jon Targaryen bombshell — how many names does this guy want? — would forge a major alliance with Team Dany. We have already seen Jon make goo-goo eyes at the Queen's "big heart," and fans/directors alike are already shipping the pair, but a blood tie would bond them even further. There are those who call out a possible Jon and Dany romance as sick — they are aunt and nephew — but jeez, has anyone seen Jaime and Cersei recently? Even if you do have a problem with keeping it in the family, it certainly looks like that is the way author #GeorgeRRMartin is taking us. Either way, never send a Bran to do a Sam's job, and we are sure that the tenacious Tarly is the one to give us the show's biggest ever reveal!
