'Booksmart' Is a Hilarious Comedy with a Lot of Heart and Great Performances

I am still in shock...

Do you understand what it's like to be fully aware of the 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes that this movie had, but not be able to attend any of the free advance screenings that you've been getting invited to for MONTHS because you're not old enough to go?!

It is a painful experience. But I was able to catch this movie anyway, and here is my review.

Here We Go!

Booksmart is a coming-of-age comedy film written by Emily Halpern, Sarah Haskins, Susanna Fogel, and Katie Silberman, and directed by Olivia Wilde in her directorial debut.

This film is about two hard-working high school seniors (portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein) who are on their way to attending great colleges, but the night before their graduation, they decide to go out to a huge party in order to make up for the time they spent studying instead.

All I can say is that I am actually in shock from what I watched. Because ever since this movie premiered at South by Southwest last March, it's been getting a ton of praise from critics, and I was really curious to see what would make a comedy film receive that much praise.

It turns out that this is actually one of my favorites of the year and it may have a shot at my Top 10 of 2019 list. Booksmart is a hilarious comedy with great performances that surprised the hell out of me with its fantastic execution.

Now, I think we can all agree the most important ingredient in a comedy is the comedy. That is, does the comedy make you laugh? In this case, it does. It really does. There were many moments where I was laughing really hard because the comedy works really well in this movie.

What about the story? I've heard many call this film the female Superbad—I personally haven't yet seen Superbad, but from what I've heard, the stories are similar. But the execution of the story was just really well-done. It's not the most original film I've ever seen, but it is a very well-crafted comedy.

I also thought the performances in this movie were great. Dever and Feldstein share some fantastic chemistry on screen, and they have a very believable, wonderful friendship. They also nail both comedy and drama in this film, and I thought they were great.

However, a problem that I have with this movie is that there are some relationships and scenes that feel a bit rushed and out of nowhere, so that's probably my biggest issue with the film.

But this movie still surprised me and entertained the hell out of me. I really loved what this movie did with the characters and there is a surprising amount of heart in this film that I wasn't expecting.

There is a bit of conflict in this film between characters, and it was really well-handled. Everything that this movie wants you to feel during every single scene is just executed perfectly, and that's what I love about this movie.

I'm gonna give 'Booksmart' a 9/10.

Now, I'd HIGHLY RECOMMEND watching this movie instead of Aladdin. Because let me put it this way: you've already seen Aladdin and you know what's gonna happen. And if you haven't seen it yet, watch the ANIMATED film instead of this live-action remake.

But you DON'T know what will happen in this movie and I think it's very important to be giving money to original films instead of cash-grab remakes, ESPECIALLY when it's a movie that's THIS great and made by women.

It's a very fun movie that handles female relationships very well, and this is just an incredibly enjoyable watch. I highly recommend it. Thank you so much for reading!
