Brace Yourself: Spin-Offs (And Winter!) Are Coming To 'Game Of Thrones'!

Although Game of Thrones is set to end in 2018, it seems that winter, and sequels, are coming to George R. R. Martin's fantasy world!

Whilst we may be in that awkward Game of Thrones-less stage of the year, it doesn't mean we have forgotten HBO's powerhouse show. After wiping the board with a record-breaking Emmy win, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss teased the future of their ice-and-fire spectacle. Although the main show is set to end in 2018, it seems that winter, and sequels, are coming to George R.R. Martin's fantasy world! The main question here is: who (and what) could take over when the race for the Iron Thrones has ended?

Rumors of prequels, sequels and mini-series related to #GameOfThrones have being doing the rounds for a while now, and speaking after the awards, executive producer Benioff said:

You might want to ask George about that...It’s a great world that George created. I think it’s a very rich world, and I’m sure there will be other series set in Westeros, but for us, this is it. That’s really a question for George.

Whilst the producers may be out after the proposed eighth season, author George R.R. Martin, added fuel to the fire:

Well, I do have thousands of pages of fake history — everything that led up to Game of Thrones — so there’s a wealth of material there, and I’m still writing more.

Not to put all our dragon eggs in one basket, but that sounds to us like television isn't quite done with the world of Westeros and beyond. Martin did remind us that he still has the sixth book The Winds of Winter to finish, as well as the final book, AND the last two seasons of the show. If a spin-off is coming, it is likely a very long way a way. There will be the inevitable story of King Robert's rebellion, but whilst we grow older than Melisandre waiting for the other continuations, here are five spin-offs we would love to see!

Dragon Ball V

Once the ancestral home of the Targaryen family, now reduced to a smouldering realm of flames, Valyria offers up oodles of potential. Not much is known about the ruined lands, other than it was all but destroyed in the 'Doom of Valyria.' In the books, it is claimed that dastardly Euron Greyjoy has visited Valyria to claim Dragonbinder, a mythical horn to control Daenerys's dragons. In the HBO series we had a fleeting visit with Tyrion and Jorah, with the latter contracting his current plague of Greyscale. The Targaryen ancestry already dominated a lot of the pre-show history, but to go back even further and explore the golden-haired family is an intriguing prospect.

The Walking 'Red'

Just where has the Red Woman been for those 400+ years? Fiery red-head Melisandre's age reveal was one of the biggest jaw drops of Season 6, and we are sure she has some colourful stories in her past. Was there ever a Mr. Melisandre before she popped out Stannis's smoke-baby? Where do the priestesses get trained? Is there some sort of Red Woman Hogwarts? Last season also introduced us to Ania Bukstein's Red Priestess Kinvara, so we know there are more out there. Think The Craft, but with a lot more boobs!

Married with children.

We always felt that both Max von Sydow and the squirrel-like Children of the Forest were vastly underused, strung together over Bran's season absence. We finally saw that the mischievous Children created the White Walkers in an attempt to save themselves from man. The chance to delve into the war between nature and man — as well as the creation of The Night's King — would be phenomenal!

There's snow place like Hardome.

Speaking of which, the icy lands further North than you care to go are full of mystery. From Thenns to Direwolves, Mance to Craster — it may be grim up North, but there is a plethora of tales to tell. The place the Free Folk call(ed) home was a place where you ride polar bears, and warging is the norm. Just how did Mance Rayder unite the Free Folk, and where did the rest of the Direwolves go? We have already visited Hardhome (in arguably the show's best episode), but that was only a peek at what icy wonders lie beyond the realms of the Seven Kingdoms.

It's always sunny in Dorne.

Well, I never thought I would be writing this, but... we should go back to Dorne. Hear me out! We need to hear the tale of Queen Nymeria and her band of refugees. After being exiled from her homeland by the Valyrians and their dragons, Nymeria forced a marriage with Lord Mors Martell. Together, the pair conquered the sunny lands, and Dorne was born. It's hardly our top choice of holiday destination, but if you are going to properly explore Martin's history, it is a must-visit state. Long before Dorne was overrun with wise-cracking Sand Snakes, it was probably a pretty interesting place to visit. There is no denying that the women of Dorne are a formidable force, but as their first ruler, Nymeria was a bad-ass warrior queen that even Dany would have to watch — she even had Arya's Direwolf named after her! If you still aren't convinced we should go back to Dorne, it would be pretty cool to somehow see Areo Hotah actually swing his giant axe!

Bonus: Where in the world is Gendry Baratheon?

Image: HBO

Along the lines of Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?, we spend each week with other characters guessing where the last Baratheon bastard actually is. Clue: Still rowing!

Whilst cast members and producers have been quick to deny reports of a movie continuation after Season 8, a spin-off could be the perfect way to continue HBO's Golden Goose. Martin's world has being growing since 1991, and with each book reading at well over 600 pages, there is plenty of source material to sink our teeth into. As one of the most successful television shows of all time, it would seem foolish to part ways after just seven years. Like the Greyjoy family says..."what is dead may never die."
